Not everyone who was a great player can be a great coach/executive figure. Pressure can be too much.
Wishing both the best, though Awesome to see my favourite Chinese player become the president of CTTA.:)

The bad news is that we won’t see Ma Long play. The good news is that he earned a highly respectable role in shaping Chinese table tennis without going through the hierarchy and politics. The privileges of being the GOAT and being well connected with LGL.

He went through the hierarchy and politics, just not in the American way

and skipped being coach

Think about it, WLQ is 5 years older, but looks 5 years younger than the others that became head coaches first.
WLQ is 2 years younger than Qin.....

Is WLQ a good coach?

Just from watching him play, I get the sense that he is a strong technical game but is a bit weak mentally and tactically.

I wouldn't have pegged him as a top coach candidate
WLQ was always known to be a brute force player not a highly tactical player throughout his career. His shots were powerful enough to unravel opponents especially during the speed glue era, but his lack of proper tactics made it easy for opponents to exploit and gain advantages over him. Not to mention, he was very tall that helped him with generating power shots but made him slower in movement.

These photos make me feel like it’s 2005 all over again when WLQ was on top of the world in table tennis, but now in 2025 the president of CTTA while Ma Lin and WH were scrambling to gain success as players but weren’t doing so well and struggling now as coaches and Ma Long just entered the scene as a player back then but now in 2025, entering as an official.

true

there is a high probability that either or both Ma Lin and Wang Hao would fail in the job of head coach and add a very terrible story to they otherwise brilliant careers.

WLQ on the other hand has all praises and successful story post playing years.

Ma Long is very very clever.

I think this was the plan all along, and he was in on it. It's pretty obvious now that the CNT grooms the top players to eventually take over the mantle in some role and rise to the top, unless they're explicitly not interested. Of course it's a high pressure job but they're in the know of the perks.

So what's LGL gonna do now? Just WTT & ITTF Chief I guess. At least he's given you one less thing to talk about.

Ma Lin would fail due to him being far too emotional as a person.

Wang Hao would fail due to him being too casual as a person.

Watching them play the 2008 Olympic final gave me the impressions of their personalities.
