Official ETTU YouTube channel with questionable content

Grown men: "I don't understand why table tennis is a dying sport and why more women or Juniors don't play it"

Official European YouTube Account....... Hold my Beer......

"HOT professional table tennis player doing her job"

I know we've discussed this before, and the "culture" divide really is a thing here (especially towards women).

But honestly..... From an "Official" YT account to post titles like that (with pretty garbage content), is 100% part of the problem.

Imagine if Wimbledon (or the US Open) posted thirst trap videos of Swiatek or Sabalenka with creepy titles.

Or FIFA posting a "top 10 football hotties" for the Women's World Cup.

It's embarrassing.

This is a real interesting comment because about an hour ago I was watching some great TT action ,WTT Youth Contender Batumi 2023.
They had boys and girls barely teen-aged and some were playing real
good table tennis strokes and I was thinking that here is the future of this sport right in front of my eyes.

Confucius: How to be a decent human being
https://ctext.org/analects/yan-yuan/zh?en=on
Yan Yuan:
Yan Yuan asked about perfect virtue. The Master said, "To subdue one's self and return to propriety, is perfect virtue. If a man can for one day subdue himself and return to propriety, all under heaven will ascribe perfect virtue to him. Is the practice of perfect virtue from a man himself, or is it from others?" Yan Yuan said, "I beg to ask the steps of that process." The Master replied, "Look not at what is contrary to propriety; listen not to what is contrary to propriety; speak not what is contrary to propriety; make no movement which is contrary to propriety." Yan Yuan then said, "Though I am deficient in intelligence and vigor, I will make it my business to practice this lesson."

Whilst trying to find a way to watch some of the matches from the Euro team championships I came across this video:

Am I missing something here? Surely this isn't ok?
She is a fashion statement... with radioactive rubber and a slit in the skirt. Nothing wrong at all :)

You'll always see players get to that level though, which doesn't really give a clear picture of the sport as a whole.

How does it feel locally?

Certainly in the UK, the numbers are struggling.

Lack of facilities, lack of coaching, lack of interest, lack of money.....

Leagues have gone from 6 or 7 divisions to 2 or 3 over the years.

I see "official" statistics and reports saying the sport is doing well etc, but I just wonder how many people are playing "seriously" vs picking up a bat at a pub, shopping centre or garden.

It is not popular in Western societies to say the quiet part out loud. The British especially and to a lesser but growing degree America are very prudish parts under religion and parts under feminism of a certain kind which makes you believe that before modern times, all women were slaves and property. You can post the video because the lady is pretty and everyone will know that part of the reason the lady is popular is because she is pretty but you shouldn't say that the reason you are posting the video is because the lady is pretty. Such direct references are considered vulgar. It is objectifying the woman to find her pretty.

By the way, the title has been fixed.

To add to this.... If a random YT account had posted the video, there would be no issue.

There are plenty of videos from random accounts designed to get views by posting provocative thumbnails and titles.

But for an apparent "Official" account which is designed to promote Table Tennis to publish a video where the title needs to reference the appearance of the player, is just doing it wrong.

One of the local clubs near me had a women's day yesterday with a really good turn out - from all ages and levels.

Then you get this from the ETTU. Pointless content and embarrassing that at senior levels of the sport they think this is ok.

Good they have changed the title - but why not delete it!

In terms of the UK we have stayed at 4 divisions for a while but there is a lack of new faces

Yeah, MK does Women only days and they seem popular - It's good to get more people from all backgrounds into it!

I'm surprised they haven't deleted the video - It's such a pointless 40 seconds.

definitely an amateur content manager
if TT was a major sport in Europe, this would be in the news and someone needs to apologies.
But since TT is non existence, it will just be dust under the carpet, just like all those mediocre umpiring decisions or other administration issues. No one will take ownership to make TT because a 5 star sport. It is okay to be "hobby" / "games" / "recreational".
The ETTU content manager should be fired.

I would go so far as to say someone should be fired - but certainly educated on why that isn't ok.

This day and age, it should be common sense.
Spanish Football boss should be fired too.
There are things, you just don't do, it isn't the 90s or 80s or 50s any more.

TT needs to show its class, and not just a basement sport.
In Taiwan, a young man took table tennis out of the basement over a decade or so ago.

basically TT needs space, and space in Taiwan was expensive, so all previous (amateur) clubs hired basements.
The air, dampness was terrible and it only attracted old people.
So this young man, rented space in "above basement" floors. He rented space in the upmarket suburbs, near schools.
He was the pioneer to say, TT is good for kids and he targeted the student market.

After a few years later, he opened quite a few branches and made an environment where parents want to send their kids.
Those basement clubs, was only old people - and members got older and older.
The young man's club has life, has vitality, because he saw there is a problem and from any problems, you can find opportunities.

Taiwan is way ahead of any European country when it comes to school kids and table tennis.
And these improvements was not by the national federation or national players, but with individuals who want to uplift the image of the sport from basement to tier 1 status.
The same goal should be in the eyes on people who can make influence in this ETTU organization imo.

Agreed, it should be common sense - but I imagine the difference in experience between the head of the Spanish FA and social media person at ETTU would be massive. They maybe very junior or inexperienced - has it been through the right signoff stages? If someone high up has been involved they should be accountable.

I can be guessing now, but i'm sure you will agree there is good enough guesstimate for me to say that, what happens in the bottom, shows you the culture behind the scenes.
if the culture is not like that, I doubt this kind of stupid mistake would ever come out.

I (almost) feel sorry for the Spanish boss.

This is said with zero knowledge of him as a person (so if he's a genuine piece of trash, then fair enough), but it feels a little like the kiss is an excuse to go after him for other reasons.

Yes, you have to be pretty bloody stupid to do what he did on a global scale - But having watched it live at the time, I don't think there was any sinister motives, and the Spanish have a pretty touchy feely culture in general.

Either way, in this day and age he should know better, and he was always going to lose the following arguments.

As for your Taiwanese example....... Maybe that works in a place where Table Tennis is visible anyway.

But in Europe (for example), it's competing against Football, Rugby, Cricket, Handball, Hockey...... Tons of sports where the money is crazy and people want to get involved.

In the UK, a former Commonwealth Games player set up (with the help of Lottery Funding) a dedicated Table Tennis Centre, using the floor of the 2012 Olympics (I think), and brand new tables/lighting etc.

They ran events, tournaments, coaching - The whole lot.

After a few years it had to shut as the cost of keeping it running didn't come close to what they needed.

We just don't have the interest.
