Hey all
I have encountered 2 opponents recently, one better than than me, one not, and both have given me trouble with one particular type of shot, a flat hit side swiping FH that goes to my BH corner.
What shot should I choose to return this ball properly. Should I be trying to take it early with as BH drive or is it better to be back from the table slightly and moving across to play as BH loop? Or something else?
They always execute this shot when I've played a poor shot due to being out of position or under pressure. It's not a shot they play in quicker rally situations.
I probably do need to spot it earlier and prepare for it that bit sooner but the sidespin, fade they have on it is taking it away from me in my BH corner and I've not really figured out a good counter for it yet.
Apart from positioning what is the % shot in this instance?

i hate this forehand fade shot too :D
i can't do it myself and not really a lot of people doing this too, so they often hit me by suprise, but as you already said this shot is mostly a punishment for a weak and unthought shot out of position i did on my own. i think more then better ball placement there is not really so much one can do, because when you are out of position then you mostly only try to fish it back and hope for a stalemate.

but what i do if i face those players is trying to place my FH topspin even wider and deeper or with a bit of sidespin on my own, to get it curve in the FH side behind the net. from there it is pretty hard to do the fade shot and due to the sidespin it comes mostly back. if you play in the middle then try make a finish shot, or play it really deep and then prepare mentally that it can come back to your BH side.

This shot is quite disgusting as a serve receive of reverse pendulum. I do it all the time and abuse it quite hard.

Think about the spin a bit - if it is righty to righty matchup, the spin is equivalent to receiving a FH pendulum sidespin.

If you know how to BH loop against incoming FH pendulum, it is the exact same stroke. Ride the sidespin (go with the spin) and it will not be too difficult. I tend to take it earlier (my preference for BH shots in general) but everyone has their preferences.

Because it curls towards to wide BH, I need to catch from wide BH side.
As mirror of FH hook loop vs FH hook loop, it is easier to countered by BH side(hook)-loop from left side of the ball for me.
Alternatively, I may to do FH fade loop from BH corner.

Same concept in this video 5:30
FH fade loop is extremely hard unless your pivot footwork is super good and the freaking arena has enough space for pivoting (a lot dont!). Imo BH loop is the easiest way to counter this.

Definitely, it has shorter timing window than BH also. I also prefer BH mostly, I’ve just said as an alternative(aggressive) option.

Hey
Thanks for that - your first line made me laugh! :)
I was actually hoping that you might reply on this because just yesterday I was just reading your 'Spin Theory' thread from last year, a great thread with lots of good input from many members here.
Its here if anyone else is interested to have a look https://www.tabletennisdaily.com/forum/topics/spin-theory.32363/

I think your reply has allowed me to identify the problems accurately.
The first is my speed of movement, I need to get into position more quickly.
Second is my distance to the table, I'm usually too close so I think I need to be another half metre back when executing to allow time and room for the shot.
I have to set up the robot soon and have a go at this. I dont have any training partners who play this shot...

As I've moved up a level in league this year I will soon be playing the stronger player who uses this shot.
If I can get even half of these back on the table I think I can beat him, we are pretty evenly matched everywhere else.
I also need to remember to play to his BH when in difficulty to reduce his opportunities for the shot.
Anyway, thanks again!
