Hey,

I'm changing rubbers at September, so I wanna have an idea of what to go with. Until now I played with t05 and t05fx but I want to go back to hurricane.

I have played with hurricane 3 neo some 5 years ago, and now that prices have dropped a bit, it's a good investment to put them on again.

I've pretty much decided to go with some version of it on the fh and a neo 37° on the bh.

So I just want advice on what to get for the fh. Is it worth it to get a blue sponge provincial, and what hardness/thickness to get?

Regarding to if I'll be able to use it, yes. I'm athletic, strong and have the technique.

I remember the 41 orange I used back then had way too high throw, is blue lower throw?

Thanks.

My recommendation just is commercial neo (orange ,39 supposed)

Then you can increase hardness or try out blue sponge or adjust boosting rate for your liking.

T05 is waay softer and bouncy than any h3, 41 could be love/hate situation.

Cheaper and smoother transition is commercial neo one.

Boosted 41 would be harder than non boosted 39, so you can try without boosting at first.

Personally, pro-nat 41 without boosting is bit of waste of money unless you say “I want the hardest rubber” for your taste.
If so, then just buy 41.

On the other hand, boosting is another topic, you need to find your liking. You can test up cheaper one easier.

But, my personal choice is neo prov 39 blue 2-3 layer boosting (I have a durometer to boost according my like).
(If I need to go budget, I would just use a commercial one in my stock)

Are you boosting your rubbers or not?

If Not. Check out Sanwei - Target National. It's faster and harder than Hurricane 3, and gives a lower throw.
If you boost. The Yinhe - Big Dipper Pro or National could be something. They are quite hard and rigid but come alive with booster. Yinhe - Jupiter III ASIA is also a nice, hard rubber with higher speed.

I can't really say if the blue sponge gives a lower throw, but it's a bit different feel. A tiny bit softer, but some more power in a way.

What is the difference between the Big Dipper 1 and the Big Dipper Pro? Is the topsheet stickier? Harder?

I'm not getting commercial, I don't like the newer batches, there's something off about them.

I used to jump between t05 and h3 between matches, I don't have an issue with the hardness.

Regardless of what sponge you get, orange or blue. You should try 40 degrees boosted. I'd personally stick with Orange sponge as it's closer to the catapult effect of Tensors.
You need to get used to the rubber anyway so it doesn't matter what version you get at first.
I wanna get rid of the catapult, but I also don't boost. Not for matches at least.

I'll get used to it in one or two sessions, what's the throw on them?

I don't boost.

I've played with all of them and despise them. I've ended up to hurricane 3 every time I tried Chinese rubbers.

Don't get me wrong but it seems you've already inclined towards to 41 BS,
then you could just buy 41 degree BS.

It's a totally different rubber. The top sheet is more tacky and feels more like the Provincial/National versions of DHS Hurricane 3. The sponge isn't as bouncy as Big Dipper 1. It's quite hard and numb and for me to use it, it requires some boosting.

I'm inclined towards a hurricane. Not really for 41, the throw between the orange and blue is what I'm not sure about. I haven't played the blue.

My two cents:

1) orange sponge, after boosting, does feel quite a bit like tensor.

2) I am not sure if other people agree or disagree. I find orange sponge to be bouncier than blue sponge, after the same layers of boosting. However, blue sponge feels harder (not softer to me) but I agree that blue sponge has less bounce than orange sponge. However, blue sponge's top speed is faster.

3) I have a sheet of national blue sponge. compared to provincial blue sponge, national to me is a waste of money. Provincial has pretty good quality control as it is.

4) I play with provincial blue sponge 39 degree 2.15mm boosted. I like 39 degree. I have a couple 40 degree sheets that I have not gotten around to. I think 41 degree without boosting will most likely feel like a brick.

5) Finally, I agree, do not get orange sponge commercial H3. The tackiness of hurricane is no where like it was 5 years ago so you have to temper your expectation a bit. However, provincial blue sponge's top sheet is DEFINITELY tackier than commercial orange sponge's top sheet. Don't ask me why. Due to the differences in the tackiness of the top sheet, they play almost like two different rubbers.

6) I have no idea what the throw angle is. To me, I am used to low throw on my forehand. Transitioning from commerical orange sponge to provincial blue sponge earlier this year was not difficult at all. Plus with hurricane you can just use the tacky topsheet to lightly brush the ball and obviously the throw is very high if you don't engage the sponge. In fact, earlier today, I did that a few times during match and everyone who tries to smash through the high spinny ball almost (80% of the time) smash the ball out.

7) Sanwei Target National blue sponge plays eerily similar to H3 provincial 39 degree blue sponge. Due to cost, I have a couple blades having Sanwei Target National blue sponge (from my supplier, H3 provincial blue sponge 39 degree neo is a bit more expensive than Sanwei Target National blue sponge) so I switch between those blades pretty easily from one day to the next.

8) I know you are set on buying Hurricane but I would say Sanwei Target National blue sponge's top sheet is a bit more tackier than Hurricane's top sheet nowadays. The blue sponge of Sanwei Target National also feels a bit harder than H3 provincial blue sponge 39 degree.

Meaning how hurricane played 5 years ago is a bit different than today, due to the reduction in tackiness. That's part of the reason, earlier this year, I gave up on commercial orange sponge because the top sheet is barely tacky.

I played with H3 39 prov OS, ( have not tried BS yet) and recently set up a blade with Sanwei Target National. I can say the Sanwei is one size smaller in all aspects, I will probably not use it again. Both were boosted, 2 layers of standard seamoon. I have sheets of BS in wait, we’ll see maybe next season.

Cheers

Thanks for the insight!

Regarding the commercial h3 as it was 5 years ago, would the modern h3 pro orange be similar to these old hurricanes?

If that's the case, I could see me going for a pro orange.

No, entire line of H3’s have less tackiness now. But the ones I have tested are spinny as h—l.

Agree. The entire line of H3's have less tackiness now.

Blue sponge is more tacky than orange sponge.

Yes orange sponge was sooooo much tackier 5 years ago than now. I would skip orange sponge provincial and go for blue sponge provincial.

Then why did this guy say that blue is more tacky? It makes sense to me, pro is of higher quality and should be more tacky. And blue is a higher "trim", so again it makes sense.
