Why do I suck at Table Tennis?

says Backhand fixing 🛠
Good day, everyone. I'm a Jpen player, and I suck at Table Tennis. I may know a lot about theory and stuff, but I have 0 skill in putting it into practice. Whenever I hit the ball, it goes up, and gives my opponent a chance to smash. I can't whip the ball like I want to. Do any of you have tips for me?

I already have a coach, but I still suck. The ball either flies away or into the net
You should be very proud of yourself . You belong to a huge group of millions of table tennis players that really suck at it. We are the glorious majority. Those that are really good at it, are just freaks of nature. 😁

Like chess, table tennis is too difficult for human beings. Just as your cell phone can now crush Magnus Carlsen in chess, one day a robot will be able to crush Ma Long in table tennis using that very same cell phone as a paddle. We all suck. Forget about ever being any good. The goal is to become slightly less bad.

Thx for the comfort, but I just want to be better, not a world class player.

First thing is to not set your sights to high , it takes years to be any good at table tennis , you need to set your goals lower and just try to get your shots on the table. When you are learning it's all about a 10 shot rally then 20 and so on !!! Your not trying to kill the ball you should be relaxed playing well with in yourself!! You will improve just don't give up and don't set to high goals!!!

A couple of harsh truths:

1) Don't play J-Pen in this day and age. Simply no benefits to it in the modern game.
2) The game is not beginner friendly at all which is also why it doesn't grow. Unless you are talented and are working with a good coach, not just a coach, or both... you will probably suck at the game for a long time.
3) I'm not sure what you think "knowing a lot in theory" looks like but if it refers to internet research, that stuff just doesn't work.

Wanted to say, switch to pips but then I see you already are using pips. So, there is nothing else to do but to switch to pickle-ball / padle and beat the crap of em'boomers at your local clubs and feel good about it.

Is there a reason you chose penhold over shakehand? Have you ever tried shakehand extensively? Sounds like your technique is your roadblock, but we haven’t seen how you play.

PS, I suck too.
I started out with Shakehand, but I switched to Jpen because of how nice it felt on my hand. For shakehand, my backhand is good but my forehand sucks.

...Did your coach recommend this?
No, I got it because of the fact I would rather go toward hitting rather than spinning. (Got it b4 coach)

1) I feel like there could still be benefits to it, but I play it because of how comfortable it is.
2) Dang, but I just want to get better, not be like a master.
3) Fair enough.

XD I don't want to feel good. I want to get better!

You will get better, it just takes time. A lot of time for most people. The game has a steep learning curve for beginners.

But well, we all suck here if that is any consolation. There's always a ton of ppl better than us unless your name is Ma Long or Fan Zhendong
Really don't understand comments like this...as if people can't make goals and feel accomplishment because they aren't the literal best player in the world...
