Top seeds are Steffen Mengel in MS and Satsuki Odo in WS. Many Chinese men and women and Japanese women in this tournament.
Odo bullied the poor Chinese chopper... there was one point that after a power loop and a chop return, Odo's push multi-bounced on the table... the opponent was so shocked she needed a time out...

Yep, it helps that Hashimoto and Sato are Odo's T-League teammates. Odo and Ito are like two professors of how to play choppers.

Hashimoto and Sato deserve their own award for Japan. but that is another story. Even when Japanese men need to play choppers in MS, Sato and Hashimoto are on duty.

Great win for 16 yr old Yuna Ojio over 20 year old Fan Shuhan of China 3-2,11-9.
Exhibit A for people who talk about how grip is so important in table tennis... don't get me wrong, it is a good grip, but I am sure the coaches who worked with her just had to figure it out as they went along.

Hard to get recognition if you're a junior Japanese girl not named Miwa Harimoto, but Yuna Ojio is doing quite well beating Liu Hsing-Yin (WR#74). She now faces compatriot Kaho Akae in the QF.
Yuna just beat the elder (20 y.o.) Akae 3-0. Her quick strike is fun to watch. And she's pretty consistent too.

What happened to Liao Cheng Ting? He just never plays at the level I thought he would...
didn't up that one extra level and now the younger ones are catching up to him (and over taking)
2024 he still did okay for national ranking (6), last year, he was 13, so last year was tough for him.
so there is a lot going on for him to push through...
I'm not close to him or his team/coaches, so can't comment too much with inner circle stuff.

I still remember once he was ITTF U21 Grand final champion

Odo/Yokoi (JPN) 3-0 Xu/Fan (CHN) and Hashimoto/Sato (JPN) 3-0 Yang/Zhu (CHN) for an all Japan and all NP Mallets teammates WD Finals.

Odo (JPN) vs. Han (CHN) in the top half of WS. Ojio (JPN) vs. Hashimoto (JPN) in the bottom half of WS.

QF of WS was all Chinese and Japanese. Tough going for the rest of the world even in a Feeder event.
