Sanwei invited me to review their new range of table tennis shirts. To me, the designs on each of the styles were bold, striking and creative without being TOO loud. The sharp geometric patterns and colour schemes were all very appealing to me even if I can't quite carry off all the styles well.
Going through the options, I enlisted the aid of my far more fashionable missus and settled on the Black Pink style. In the spirit of openness, I do have to disclose that she thought the shirt collar was quite feminine... I didn't really see a particular difference myself and just thought the collar shape was appealing.
I got the 2XL size since Sanwei had a handy size chart to help me pick the best fitting size. Tailored-fit shirts don't always flatter me!
The shirt itself got a proper run out during the early UK summer heatwaves this year when the mercury went past 30 degrees. You may be used to the heat in other countries but heatwaves in the UK hits different. So, I greatly valued the lightness of the shirt and how cool I remained even on a hot, summer day. The fabric was quick drying and I never felt uncomfortable wearing it.
I also put it through it's paces during a summer closed community tournament I organised for the WSC TT Community in London. Movement was simple and never restrictive thanks to the flexibility of the fabric. More importantly, it's lightweight nature was appreciated during match play and during normal wear. The shirt weighs about 143g. In contrast, my Adidas-made Nottingham Forest sponsor-free home shirt was 205g and my Joola Bribar-branded table tennis shirt was 200g, making this Sanwei shirt, one of the lightest sports shirts in my wardrobe!
Now, my concerns. The shirt got a few bobbles in the fabric in the front. some from when I tried to rub out some stray table tennis glue and I noticed a bit of roughness in the fabric at the back of the shirt after several washes so I'm uncertain about the long-term durability of the shirt. The fit is also a tailored fit so, depending on your frame, it may or may not be a good fit for those that prefer a regular fit for their clothes.
As much as I love Sanwei products, I'd probably have preferred their branding to be smaller so the rest of the shirt design can stand out more (generally not a fan of huge logos across shirts unless I'm getting something like Transformers
) and they probably didn't need to print the words, "Table Tennis" at the front.
In summary, nice, bold design, great fit for me, great comfort in hot weather and when moving around, and great material making it really light to wear, paired against some concerns about durability and some elements of the design. 👌
