And thus the same results?

I just think it's interesting that 2 years have gone by and it is again the exact same lineup. About the results... yeah I think it will be pretty much the same, you only need to switch Hirano and Ito. I mean Ito has the potential to get further than Hirano last time but we will have to see. Hirano was a bit lucky that the draw meant she only faced chinese in the semis. Maybe Ito will face a chinese opponent before that, but Ito can win against the chinese.

But transparent, democratic and fair. Yet, folks aren't pleased here. Hmm, I think I've written this somewhere before.

Transparent, democratic and fair = undesirable and stupid.

A single elimination bracket might be transparent and fair in the sense that everyone has the same chances. But it is not really a good tournament format if you reliably want the best to win. At least double elimination should be played. And the selection of the coaches pick for the WTTC is certainly not exactly transparent and fair. At least do it after all the other spots are filled?

Curious about the past WTTC trials, I looked them up and voila! Ishikawa, Ito, and Hirano have never won.

Ishikawa qualified for 2007(doubles debut) and '09(singles debut) by recommendation, '11 by beating 3 top 20 players, '13-15 by All-Japan Champion, '17-19 by World Ranking.
Ito qualified for 2015(singles/doubles debut) by recommendation, '17 by World Ranking, '19 by All-Japan Champion.
Hirano qualified for 2015(singles/doubles debut) and '19 by recommendation, '17 by All-Japan Champion.

****, i am so disappointed for HAYATA. and pissed off.

I knew KATO was going to be a tough opponent. HAYATA completely choked. She had so much pressure into this event.
She's been winning everything in the last 3 months, except that match.. and now she's going to watch the WTTC singles on the bench.

Why on earth did JTTA give the wild card BEFORE the qualification tournament is over, and gave it to SATO ?

They cannot undo it now, and its really a pity.

So Hayata if off the Budapest completely?! If it's true, based on what we saw in Portugal last month, it seems like a pure nonsense for me. JNT really has to rethink their selection process.

Jeez ... what on earth ...

I find this really fascinating because what you and various members are suggesting/advocating here is exactly the meritocratic system that the CNT uses.

The JNT board selections are transparent and fair because the rules are all laid out. It'd stop being democratic the very moment they decide to do it after all the other spots are filled.

I will elaborate on these points after the tournament ends.

Ito vs Hirano under way.

12:10. Hirano's footwork is not keeping up.
8:1, 9:5, 11:5.
11:4.
6:11.
9:11. Hirano found her way back in. Mostly by pushing deep to Ito's BH, forcing a weak opener.
1:2. TO by Matsuzaki. 2:4. Hirano keeps pushing deep to Ito's BH. 2:6. Kick serves giving Ito so much grief. 3:7, 4:8, 6:8, 6:10, 7:11. Ito's kick serves not working.
Final game. Ito switches to her old tomahawk serve. 4:0. Perfect start for Ito. 5:1, 6:2, 7:3, 8:4, 9:5, 9:7. Hirano serving to Ito's short FH to great effect. 10:7, 10:8. 11:8. Too big a hole to fill.

Ishikawa vs Kato
4:11. Ended in a flash.
11:5. Returned the favor.
11:6. It's so funny that Qiu Jianxin and Ishikawa are communicating in Mandarin, right in Japan.
10:9. TO for Ishikawa. Didn't work. 10:10. 11:10. Ishikawa spotting Kato one. 11:11. 11:13.
11:8. After the game, Ishikawa tells Qiu that she has problem handling shots to her pocket.
11:5. Teammate killer 1 fended off teammate killer 2. Both are laughing after the handshake, perhaps at the irony?

Mizutani 4-2 Niwa

Harimoto 4-1 K Yoshimura

3rd Place Match
Hirano vs Kato
16:14.
4:4, 4:11. Hirano just blacked out again.
11:8. Hirano back online. Tomahawk serve of teammate killer 2 not effective.
4:1, 5:1, 6:6, 6:7, 7:9, 8:10, 8:11. Hirano offline again. While not winning outright, tomahawk serve of teammate killer 2 gives her an edge in the subsequent rallies.
5:3, 5:6, 10:6, 10:8. Tomahawk saved 2 for Kato, but not to be. 11:8.

Niwa 3-2 K Yoshimura

I’m happy for Kato, knowing her and her parents for ages. She deserves it as much as anyone in the JNT. As for Hayata, it’s not like she hasn’t had her chances (WR, Nat championship, LCQ). Got to win at the right occasion.

Sorry ... What is LCQ ?

Hayata Hina .... Low current WR, no victories in OLL JAPAN ....That's right ...And the transparency and democratic choice - everything is also correct ....
Bat:
Hayata’s victory in Portugal over Liu Shiwen gave Japan a little hope .....The hope that Japan may have got another player who can, in principle, defeat top Chinese women ...I emphasize-only possible ...
Yes, of course, Liu Shiven, judging by the results in Marvellou, is far from being in its best shape ....
Perhaps the fact that Hayata cannot play singles in Hungary has caused such a reaction ...She had a possible (possible!) Chance to confront Chinese women ....In Sato, Kato has no such chance, in my opinion, .....

Oh sorry, I meant Last Chance Qualifier.
I agree with you that Hayata probably has the best hope against CNT apart from Ito. If she has won a PT 3 month before she might have made it with no fuss. If she's the real thing, she will beat all her competitions this year and walk in to Tokyo Olympics. Let's hope she does!

Her ranking was bad in 2018 because of injuries. Also, the ranking system favours the incumbent because one scores points for being in previous team events which happened years ago, and Hayata wasn't part of the team. The current rating system doesn't reflect perfectly the true current form of a player
