How to Improve My Backhand?

Back to basics.

1 Make sure to be stable before you hit the ball, move your body so that the ball would hit your chest if you don’t strike it.
2 Be sure to have a rock steady elbow. Move your forearm forward and to the side, steady wrist.
3 For topspin topspin rallies, your bat angle need to be closed. A great tip I got was to move the thumb to allow a more closed angle, helped me a lot.

Good advice above. Would like to add. Look at Kreangas backhand on youtube. He has a very wide movement, almost from the right hip and then UP. Don't do Kreanga, but also don't do too much the opposite of Kreanga xD

I think its nice to, like comment above said, have steady elbow and aim from your navel so to speak. You need good fotwork for backhand.

You can also look up Pech Pong on youtube, nice tutorials. Or TI Long Table tennis.

Yes - once the backhand basics are in place, it is time to add elements that contributes to a really good backhand. Mainly your arm and wrist, but also the body to some degree ( the bodys main job is to create a stable foundation for your stroke ) create a powerful and fast whip like movement, a rip, that even amateurs can achieve unless wrist is sore.

There are so many of us that say that our forehand is better then the backhand - but really, there should be no cause for that. Backhand involves less then forehand. You don't need to activate your waist, your shoulder, your upper arm, and you strike the ball in your comfort zone just in front of you, and your body is aimed at the direction of the shot.

I also need to add one more point - be relaxed. Trying to hard is failing so hard. Do not think about power before the backhand is stable. Perform your stroke with 30% speed, then 50% speed. I have noticed, that even a backhand loop with less speed can create a topspin ball out of a backspin ball.

No i would say copy kreanga as close as possibly he probably has the best backhand ever with, Fan Zehndong, Zang Jike, Lin Shidong. All of them Start from the side of the body.
The blade starts at the left side of the body, the blade endes at the left side of the torso. This is a modern forehand and the most stable one.
At first try to counter balls this shpuld be enough fot the start.
Always try to keep your racket high(not for open up)

If backhand is not stable, it is bad to try to copy advanced techniques. In theory you can learn it - but you will be limited to what kind of balls you are able to strike that way.

Hi everyone,

I am facing a problem with my backhand. My forehand is okay, but my backhand is not strong.

Sometimes:

  • I miss easy shots
  • My control is not good
  • I cannot generate much spin
I am using a normal rubber, but I am not sure if the problem is my technique or my setup
Are you really using Tenergy on a Viscaria at the moment?
From reading (miss easy shots, poor control, cannot generate spin) you seem like you might be a beginner, what is your level?
I'm guessing it's a combination of blade too fast, rubbers too fast and poor technique.
Can you give more information and maybe a video of your play?

i agree he has a good backhand. But Kreanga has big backhand movement. A downside in todays modern table tennis. But nevertheless, if you copy him you can also be great. There is greatness to be found in a lot of places 😁
