instead of building a third rb like Victoria
vicky strass Strassburger, brazilian national player and world ranking #303 and beautiful youtuber, I'm actually contemplating buying another pongb*t (= robi3) for 225€ shipped from alix. The only reason why i haven't ordered yet is the risk of customs adding another 60-80 bucks (import duties incl fees; sometimes slipped thru): at that elevated total the price isn't far away from the 350€ special on amazonde (full price 430€ lmao 🤣).
will a pips rb even work beautifully? it will work yes but not beautifully, i believe. the PVC sheet (= my rb2) also works ... but not beautifully: the ball must hit rb2 at the ball's ascending trajectory, i.e. bounce off the table right next to the rb2. otherwise the rebound lands in the net. as the master of rbpon i have full control over the ball and my rb's, so i am able to consistently release the required shots which lead to valid rebounds off of rb2 but it's tedious anyway, not a beautiful, effortless thing. if my goal is to handle a variety of underspin balls, floaters, and zerospin balls, then i practice that with my robi2 (robi1 isn't suitable for that task, maybe in future).
ofc it'd make sense to have a (beautifully working?) rb3 standing right next to rb1. so i would hit a succession of topspins against rb1 and occasionally hit 1(one) effortless topspin against rb3 and learn what comes out of it: if the rb3's rebound lands (not into the net), i would then recover the ball (the rally) with the help of (back to) rb1. -- this is no theory ... gimme a rb3 and i can test out right away if this rb1-rb3-combo idea works out well, I'm curious myself! I'm just saying that the rb1-rb2-combo isn't recommendable. rb2 *ucks (it works but it *ucks), maybe rb3 is more forgiving and doesn't *uck as much? yeah i know ... that's what the TO had asked about haha. the point being, rb1 is extremely forgiving, the player has much spielraum (freedom) to release a topspin shot at it and rb1 would still produce a valid rebound from it, that's like a wonder! rb2 offers very little, almost no spielraum to the player, that's why it *ucks; it's too tedious to have no spielraum. so we're wondering about the spielraum of rb3: how much freedom does the player have in his shot-making ... until\before rb3 nets the ball? sure , I'm curious myself about this exact question. i know all the ins and outs about rb1 and rb2. i would be perfect for assessing rb3 in relation to them. just gimme.
since i doht use rb2 anymore, i could (would i? 🤔) tear off the PVC mat from it (hopefully without damaging it), and install various(!!) pips rubbers on it, maybe 3 different models. so whenever i hit rb3 (new numbering), I'd get a surprise rebound back. i'd like that!, but only if rb3 offered a wide spielraum. and we doht know that. please doht let me be the guinea pig 🐖. I've been doing well against pips players anyway, so i doht feel the urge to build rb3 ... i have no idea which 3 rubber models I should buy, to start with! ( i would have to ask gpt )
rbpon has become second nature to me, it's highly enjoyable, easy, and has made me a better player, with improved ball control, and i still use it. some lonesome 🥹days I would start off with 1h of rbpon , then quickly switch to drills on the robi2 for another 1.5h+.
maybe this thread will become our new go-to thread on the topique of rb's on TTD?
anyway, currently my rb1 is angled at 63°math (measured against the horizontal). i might even manage to play 62°math (I'll try soon!) but that's about the limit where your zerospin shots ("flat hits") wouldn't pass the net anymore if shot at your regular incoming angle.
at 63...65°math, i can release high quality topspins (loops) and also drives (zerospin) at rb1, or several drives in succession!, and all these shots would keep coming back. a safe drill is releasing regular topspins in succession, and as soon as rb1 produces a higher rebound, trying to drive the ball with zerospin (flat hit, smash). And being able to do so from your backhand side as well!
--> being able to execute bh flat hits (e.g. thru
the inverse technique) brings you one step closer to beating pips players
