Beginner Setup Advice

Hello,

(Since this is my first post on this forum i hope this is the right place for my question. If not, please tell)
I am a beginner player and i am looking to buy my first custom paddle. For this reason i would like to keep my budget as low as possible as i am just trying some things out. I was looking to spend a little under half my budget on a blade and really liked the specs of the donic defplay senso v3 (straight handle for chopping and twiddling). My playstyle is modern defender-ish, i like to chop almost everything backhand while playing a loop with my forehand. Therefore i was looking for a LP (probably ox or below 1.0) for BH and a spinny medium speed (no tensor) inverted rubber with 2.0 to MAX for FH (as a beginner I'll probably lack control when using a too fast FH rubber). I looked at countless options but because of my lack of experience choosing custom rubbers i couldnt reach a conclusion. Does anyone have any recommendations?

As a beginner, why do you choose LP for backhand? But if you're certain of it just go for a good, not too expensive LP like Yinhe Qing, or Giant Dragon Meteorite. For forehand perhaps Yinhe Big Dipper, 729 Dragon F or Sanwei Gear Hyper.

Good and very control Curl P1 pips, they are not cheap, but they are worth every cent, except if they do not suit you, which is unlikely, you can sell them for a good price. For forehand, I would recommend you look at such rubbers - Hurricane 3, Big Dipper, Jupiter 2.

If I may add, I remember ox long pips (without sponge) gives more distortion to the spin than long pips with any mm of sponge. Is that correct?

if so, then for a modern defender, would you then recommend an OFF - all wood blade with ox long pips on the back and a thin inverted rubber on the forehand side?

Hi Njai!

To keep the cost low, I don't have any suggestion for backhand, but if you like looping with forehand and want to develop with it, then you can't really go wrong with hurricane 3 neo!

I'm an LP player, and have a mixed style of playing, which includes modern defense..

If you are a beginner, I would recommend playing with regular rubbers, on both sides...

However, if you are particularly interested only in defense style of play, then here's some budget suggestions..

BLADE : Yinhe 980, Sword 309, Donier Defensive, Palio Chop/Chopper. If you don't mind upping your budget a bit more, then, Donic Defplay Senso V3, Tweaks Sweden Defensive.

LP Rubbers : Yinhe Neptune 0.5mm, Dawei 388D-1

Inverted : Palio CJ8000, Palio AK-47 Blue, Friendship/729 Focus III Snipe

About the FH medium hardness rubber, I was looking for this kind of solution in another thread. I received a lot of suggestions, Fastarc G-1 and Tibhar Aurus (old one) looked the best value-price options at least for me considering shipping. Try to have a look.

You can really look into Yinhe, I'm sure it is easy to get in Europe, (chtt.se for example is an option)

Yinhe blade - 980 is pretty affordable and good to start off with.

LP, Yinhe Qing ox, 0.5mm, 0.7mm can be an option. Depending if you want to generate your own spin or not, more own spin equals thicker the sponge, but requires more technique, as it is more difficult to control.

Forehand side, I thought of people I know normally start off with a Chinese tack forehand rubber, good to control the ball and powerful enough to attack the ball.
Hurricane 3 is an option, or if you want to keep it all Yinhe, then Big Dipper, 40 deg sponge is an option.

Chinese brands, especially Yinhe is really value for money.
If you want to start going European or Japanese brands, the price tag goes up 4 to 8 times.

It depends. A young beginner should always start with spinny inverted rubber from both sides and move to other type rubbers if the player's style calls for it.
Nonetheless, using social rubbers (anti or weakside short pips or long pips listed on ITTF LARC) in the 40+ plastic ball ONLY era is a complete joke & a total waste of your time.
I have no idea of OPs age Also I I am not sure how & why he decided to be a moderen defender.

If you are an older player who never learned to loop or cannot loop due to health or age reasons,, your only best choice is short pips on strong side & high aspect ratio super long pips on weakside. You do not want to use spinny inverted because it is more of a liability (unless you loop like mad) , since most of the players in tabletennis are booster supremacists, everyone knows how to play against spinny inverted.

Yeah. Just go the way you want to. But it could be good anyway to start with inverted rubbers to learn how to handle the spin. In that way you could better understand what you're giving your opponent back with the long pips.

That user has been banned (but just comes back with a new username) and has some history/grief with ITTF about pips, for 40+ years, or something like that.
Don't bother about his comments, it will confuse you and fall into his trap.

If you have a coach that can teach you modern defensive style, then starting off with inverted + LP is perfectly normal.
You don't have to start off double inverted.

Look at LP performance today at the world champs, LP knocking out higher ranked players.
LP is not dead. People stuck in 40 years ago game - mind set is dead, future on long pip is very strong.
Today I just posted on my FB of a young 16 year LP player taking U17 gold and U19 silver in WTT youth contender.
Dropped 0 games in U17, and dropped 1 game before reaching final of U19. She lost 2-3 to Bruna's sister, but was neck to neck on points.

She had a 36 hour travel journey and 12 hour time zone difference and went straight into the tournament. She was tired.
She is unranked and comes out to pretty much tell people that pips is still very much alive - if you have someone that knows how to coach it.

Since you are in South Afrcia you had the privilege of watching these secret matches where LP players were knocking out higher ranked players. If these matches are not secret may be you can give a YouTube link or something


Yes . Listen to Tony's TableTennis & other amazing experts on these ITTF worship forums and use only long pips listed on ITTF LARC. ITTF knows whats is good for choppers because they love diversity & ITTf loves choppers. ITTF knows what is good for choppers in the 40+ plastic ball ONLY era.

Getting back to the original topic, I would source everything from TT11. Blade, Tibhar Stratus Power Wood OFF-. Forehand rubber Neottec Katana black, 2.0mm sponge. Backhand rubber Friendship RITC 755 red 0.6mm sponge.

Tibhar also offers Stratus Power Defense blade but I am wondering if it would be too slow for you.

Since you are set on looping from the forehand side, then you should start with OFF- blade and get your loop motions right.

Katana is pretty bouncy but it is not tensor.
