Actually some people used short pips (incl. Mizutani!) to develop power in their backhand due to the nature of short pips (if the ball doesn't go into the sponge it will skid off the topsheet and mostly caught the net).
So before going inverted, trying to use a spinny short pips might help :)

729 802-40 would be a good start..

Edit: It's more accurate to say that using short pips in backhand develops INTENSITY rather than power. You need to be active on all your strokes, Sir, including blocks.
802-40 is kind of the middle of short pips and inverted so you could use it permanently because of it's versatility OR you could use it for developing a stronger inverted backhand.
I wanna try it out too to be honest ;)

I am using 802-40 actually :-D
the only downside is the ball is very predictable almost like inverted, some other rubbers have a more disturbing effect on the ball.
I used it at least for two or three sessions.
then last time I played I used an inverted and I felt much more comfortable with it.
wasn't doing so many dumb things with my wrist, just a clear forward stroke which I was forced to learn with pips.
I don't want to say this too loud but I wonder what it would feel like playing with pips in the fh as well.
I suspect that playing with both sides pips could actually be more effective than inverted.
even taking into account that fh loop is my most comfortable shot.

there's a guy here who plays both sides sp.
he's pretty good actually, makes lots of inverted players look very bad.
not gonna dazzle you with his virtuous game but just blocking he will beat most "wanna be zhang jike" amateur loopers.
also he's pretty low in stature so he stays close to the table.
I thought that was the reason for the pips but johnny juang and he zhi wen are pretty tall and they play with pips so I'll give it a try.

what do you mean by you can be exploited?
that you are giving initiative to the other player to attack?
giving the initiative is not always something bad.....
think about joo se hyuk, he gives initiative to the other and he is currently 11th player in the world.
also tang peng, the guy with pips which "can be exploited" is 26th player in the world :-S

Okay, you didn´t want any advise.

But could you then please explain to me why is it that so relatively few people are playing with short pips both on international level and on national level? Is it because that when you do that you will limit your options? or why is that? please enlighten me.

hey take it easy, this is just a forum to discuss ideas.
nobody holds the truth in his hands.

as for why all players play with inverted...
I guess the first reason is everybody starts with inverted.
the ones who eventually move to pips are very few so with few players few chances of them getting up there.
second reason is that inverted gives you more offensive weapons.
this is true but in order to maintain this as an advantage you need extreme consistency.
top players like ma long and zhang jike have this but the list is not so long.
in the level where I play and probably where you play too looping 3 or 4 balls in a row in a point is reason for applause and admiration.

I´m very easy.

Okay we are not playing at the same level I can see maybe thats why.

I have been playing at a relatively high level here in denmark for 20 years now and I can only come up with one name who made it to the top level here with short pips maybe there are more but only one springs in to my mind.

Good luck with your short pips.

cool, do you have ittf rating?
cause "high level" could mean anything.
maybe I play in my basement with my kids and I consider myself high level because I can beat them lol

In my opinion pips have no future. I mean how many players with pips there are in the first 50, 100 or even 200 ?

right but the difference between a 100 or 200 ittf player and a guy who plays 3 times a week after work is huge.
a player with 100 or 200 ittf record is a professional player or aiming to be one.

Yeah you're right but I actually wanted to say that there's a big difference in the amount of players with a pips and without them, no matter what ranking we're talking about :)
