How often do you have to replace your cutting knife?

I just bought a knife for $1.70 on Aliexpress. It's my first time using a knife, as I always use scissors before.

I just tested it out, and it seems to work fine. It can cut through rubber with reasonable pressure.

But how many sheets of rubber can it cut before I need to replace it?

using an Olfa, i can only do 2. maybe even less if it's a hard dense sponge. adding soapy water didn't seem to help.

I may not have the best technique as I try to do it in one go, scoring it slowly might be better

If you are using blades from Aliexpress then
1 rubber = 1 blade.
I am using a scalpel from aliexpress and this is all it will do

there is a reason why scalpel have disposable blades . The blades are honed to have an incredible sharp edge but this edge can not be made to last ................at least not at this price.

but still, 1 rubber? So what happens if you try to use it on a 2nd rubber, it just won't cut?

Well the good thing is that for $1.70, it came with 6 blades. So hopefully I can do 12 rubbers with that.

it will still cut but it is likely going to make a mess and you will have to try to fix it.

I only use knifes to cut the rubbers when I fit rubbers for other people. For myself I think it is much too anal and i am happy to just make a half - decent job using scissors

Just get an Olfa 18mm snap off blade cutter and the pack of ultra sharp NT Cutter black blades. They last at least 6 rackets or more each blade as you snap the tip off when they get dull.

I use the cheapest small snapoff blades I can find on aliexpress. I can too can cut 1 or 2 rubbers with one part of a blade.
The brand is called deli and I use the 30° 9mm blades.

If the blade is dull, the cut will look frayed

Put a little olive oil or simmular on the blade it helps too. I change blade with every new rubber.

With the frequency that you replace rubbers you'll prob be replacing blades every week 😉
I can easily get 5-6 rubbers from a blade. Sure, its not as sharp after the first two and 3,4,5&6 need a bit more care but as long as I take my time and keep good pressure it still works

I've got a cheap Tibhar-branded snapoff knife, currently has been used for 6 rubbers without snapping any parts off and is still pretty decent. I tend to start with lighter cuts to guide the deep one through though, dunno how that changes things, but I've had no issue other than skill issue yet!
