A friend of mine has a return board for practice and the board has some generic rubbers on one side. He though that it would be a good idea to add some different rubbers, Pimple rubbers on the other side so he can work with top spins to long pimple rubbers. The question is this: Should he choose to glue long pimples with or without sponge ? OX or something like 0.5mm sponge?

for rb2? yes. this is the exact mat which i had installed:

has zero friction, has a dampening effect (like a Butterfly dead rubber), is easily installed (double-sided tape) and tested, works great 👍
just in general, however, it's challenging to make any frictionless board produce a valid rebound, several conditions must be met (by the incoming ball), i wrote volumes about the topic on other forums.

i like my rb2. but since i got 2 robots, i retired the rb's for the time being. i can confirm that robot training is indeed so much better!

hope this helps, this is my setup:

rb1 = generic rubbers from Chinesepingpong, e.g. Sanwei
rb2 = PVC desktop mat, has antispin effect, i.e. the best for generating 'underspin by the returnboard'
Are you suggesting that we can generate underspin on a returnboard? I thought returnboards are only useful for topspin rallies. If we use the said material, do you think I can push to the returnboard and it will come back as underspin or topspin?

You're asking long questions. The returnboard is placed at (not over/above) the table. One never pushes to it. One plays a topspin ball: rb1 would produce a ball which has no spin or minimal topspin coming towards you, whereas rb2 would produce a ball which has lots of underspin coming towards you: this ball you can push but neither rb1 nor rb2 will produce a valid rebound from your push.

In numbers, if you generate a topspin ball carrying 20rps (rounds per second), then you'll get a underspin ball back, from rb2, carrying the identical 20rps: the spin angular velocity vector remains constant\the same.

Since your post, I am intrigued to try desktop mat on the backhand side of my return board. Following your link, I see that the desktop mat you used is made of faux leather. Can you confirm if I can buy faux leather desktop mat or it has to be made of PVC?

Your question seems ill-posed, i caht confirm

My advice: order a PC desktop mat shipped from amazon (80x40cm), stick it to your wood board with carpet tape, test the anti-spin effect and rebound, and if it doesn't work for you, then return it to amazon for FREE and test another mat from amazon etc.
