Dignics 09C – Serious Quality Issue NOT STICKY ? Let’s Talk About It.

I’m opening this post to warn and mobilize the table tennis community.

I recently bought a brand-new Dignics 09C (Black, 2.1) and immediately noticed something abnormal:
the topsheet is not tacky at all.

To be clear:

  • I have used multiple Dignics 09C over the years
  • I still own a 6-month-old Dignics 09C that remains clearly tacky
  • This new rubber feels completely different from day one
This is not a question of “expectations” or “playing style”.
When you pay €80 for a premium rubber, consistency and quality are non-negotiable.

Batch / reference visible on the packaging (see photo):
BLACK 2.1 – Code ending BAFU2

What is worrying is that the distributor simply replied: “There is no problem.”
That answer is unacceptable when several players are reporting similar issues, especially on recent batches.

If you have experienced the same issue with Dignics 09C (loss of tackiness out of the box, different feel compared to older sheets), please comment:

  • production date / batch if available
  • your experience compared to older D09C
  • black or red version
This is not about attacking a brand.
It’s about holding a premium manufacturer to premium standards.

Butterfly built its reputation on quality.
Now it’s time for transparency and accountability.

🔁 Please share so this reaches other players who may be affected.

Sorry to hear about that.
Who is the distributor you mention?
Have you tried writing to Butterfly directly?
I've only ever bought Butterfly products from the Butterfly website and didn't have this issue with two sheets of 09c but I bought them appx 12 mths ago so maybe things have changed since then.
I did receive a Glayzer 09c last week though. It's the same top sheet as Dignics and it was low on tack. It does feel a bit tacky to the touch but it only lifts the ball for 1 or 2 cm before it falls off. I seem to remember my original Dignics being more tacky than that but it was a long time ago so I don't remember exactly.

Thanks for your reply.

To answer your question, the distributor is Butterfly Germany (Tamasu Butterfly Europa). I have already exchanged 5 or 6 emails with them directly regarding this issue.

I explicitly asked for a refund, but their answer was negative. They refuse to acknowledge the defect and only offered me a discount of a few euros on a future order. Considering I bought two sheets at full price, I find this offer unacceptable and quite insulting.

Regarding the tackiness, mine doesn't even lift the ball at all, it's completely different from the usual D09C feel.

And when you put the protector sheets back on, what happens? Did the protector sheets slide off when you bought it?

The protective sheet was actually fine. It was applied correctly, with no bubbles, and adhered well to the rubber.

I don't think the issue comes from the film or storage. I am convinced this is a specific manufacturing defect (an isolated case) that Butterfly just refuses to admit.

I find that usually by using the protector sheets, I can increase the adhesion of 09c. But you are right, rare mistakes do happen in production processes. Where is the photo you referenced in your original post? Do you have a video describing your issue?

don't have a video, unfortunately.

However, I have been using this rubber for a long time. I was very surprised to see that my old sheet was still sticky, while the new one was not sticky at all right out of the package.

(I have attached the photo of the batch codes again for reference).

Thanks for your remark.

Unfortunately, in my case, the rubber is not sticky at all.

regarding the vocabulary, I used the term 'tacky' simply because that is the official wording used by Butterfly to describe the characteristics of the Dignics 09C (please see the attached screenshot).

Maybe there's some counterfeiting going on.

Maybe they changed the formula with the substance that gives rubber some tack. Look what happened to Hurricane. We still don't know why H3 lost its tack. The manufacturers are eerily quiet about that.
I can rule out the counterfeit possibility because I purchased it directly from the official Butterfly GmbH website in Germany. So it is definitely an authentic product.

As for the formula change, it's possible, but it's frustrating that there is no official communication about it.

Read well: "rubber that has like high rotational performance of a tacky rubber" aren't saying is tacky.

They should either offer a replacement or refund.

https://en.butterfly.tt/dignics-09c.html
Dignics 09c

With a sticky surface, Dignics 09c offers immense friction and grip leading to high spin value and a curved trajectory during topspin if sufficient power is generated to impact the 44° hard Spring Sponge X. The requirement in power, along with the comparatively low speed makes Dignics 09c a choice for players of higher skill range and ambition, looking for the benefits of a sticky rubber. In order to protect the sticky surface, Dignics 09c comes with a pre-applied protective foil.

Dignics 09c

Not lower quality. I keep reading this in Chinese forums. DHS has had the best sponge in tacky rubber for decades. Even Butterfly has admitted in an interview on D09c with Takkyu Okoku that tacky rubber is difficult to develop and mass-produce.

The D09C I had was only slightly ‘tacky’ / ‘sticky’, it could only lift the ball for a fraction of a second, like many ‘modern’ hybrid rubbers. DHS H3 now has reduced tack or stickiness, bringing it more in line with ‘modern’ hybrids.

’grippy’ rubbers ( non tacky / sticky ) don’t lift a ball at all.

Maybe -

‘tacky’ rubbers lift the ball for a fraction of a second.
’sticky’ rubbers lift and hold the ball for at least a second.

There is definitely some confusion regarding Tacky v Sticky !!

I just did a ball lift test with 3 bats, So maybe …….

Bat 1 - Zyre 03 both sides = GRIPPY - not able to lift the ball.
Bat 2 - Xiom O8H and O8C -
O8H barely lifted the ball = TACKY
O8C lifted the ball for maybe 1/4 of a second = TACKY
Bat 3 - Xiom Tau 2 both sides (old sheets) lifted the ball for maybe 1 second + = STICKY.
