Hello to all the TTD players — great to see you here, and I hope you’re all doing well. 🙋♂️
Quite a few people have asked me before about my experience with Target Europe Soft, but to be honest, it hasn’t been one of our primary main rubbers, so I didn’t feel my perspective alone would do it full justice.
Because of that, I spoke with my colleague Gareth, who has actually used Target Europe Soft as his main rubber for an extended period, to better understand why he chose it and how his thinking evolved through using it.
The following is in first person.👇
For a long time, I believed table tennis was about one thing: power.
Harder sponge. Faster rebound. Bigger winners.
I’ve always been the kind of player drawn to “violent aesthetics” — explosive shots, raw force, finishing the point early. If a rubber felt too soft or too controlled, I used to assume it lacked quality.
But there was a problem.
That kind of setup looked great when everything landed…
but too often, it didn’t.
Especially under pressure, my backhand quality dropped, the margin over the net got smaller, and a lot of aggressive balls simply didn’t make the table.
That’s where Target Europe Soft surprised me.
And honestly, that helped me win more points.
The biggest thing this rubber gave me wasn’t spin or speed.
It was confidence.
The softer cake sponge gave me more dwell, more feel, and a much bigger safety window. On backhand exchanges especially, it felt like the rubber was compensating for what my old “power-first” setups punished.
Where I used to force shots, now I could trust the contact.
And that changed my game.
I used to think control was something beginners talked about.
Now I see control is what allows power to show up in matches.
Target Europe Soft didn’t replace aggression — it made aggression usable.
It softened the harsh edges of the “power-above-all” mindset I used to chase.
Better arc.
More balls on the table.
More stable backhand.
Much easier opening loops.
And importantly — easier to bring my game onto the table.
That was the missing piece.
Especially if you’re a player who:
Then this rubber makes a lot of sense.
I used to believe more power meant better table tennis.
Now I think usable power matters more.
Target Europe Soft didn’t make me abandon aggression.
It made aggression land.
And that’s a much bigger upgrade.

His 6-Month Review of SANWEI Target Europe Soft: How Control Changed His Mind

It Didn’t Make Me Hit Harder — It Made Me Land More Balls.

It Filled the Gap My Old Philosophy Ignored

What I Like Most
- Soft but not mushy — it still has enough bite for active topspin
- Very forgiving in backhand rallies
- Lightweight and quick in close-table exchanges
- Linear response — no random catapult surprises
- Lets you attack with confidence instead of tension
Who I’d Recommend It To
Especially if you’re a player who:
- Loves offensive play but struggles with consistency
- Uses hard, fast rubbers but feels your error rate is too high
- Wants a backhand rubber that gives confidence under pressure
- Values controlled aggression over pure speed
Then this rubber makes a lot of sense.
Final Thought
I used to believe more power meant better table tennis.
Now I think usable power matters more.

It made aggression land.
