Hi all, SPINDEX is the new rating system being used by MLTT and they’ve recently rolled out some new features including 1 on 1 challenges. Now you could actually have official rating matches even among friends, it’s a concept used in other universal rating systems like DUPR for pickleball and has had a fair bit of success.

I think it’s a good way to take competitive table tennis into the world of social play - a seriously important bridge if the sport is going to grow more.

There’s also some more features it appears as listed below like a confidence level in the rating, this draws some similarities to Ratings Central the way it has an accuracy rating built in.

Interested to hear thoughts/experiences etc, here are some notes from the info I received for reference!

SPINDEX 2.0, a new version of our rating system that we are rolling out worldwide. You can find more about it here. Here are the highlights:

  1. Anybody can sign up and get a table tennis rating on the scale of 0 - 3000. Playing a sanctioned event is not required, players select their approximate rating.
  2. To make this work, ratings now come up with a Confidence Level that indicate how confident we are that your rating reflects your true ability. Play more matches, Confidence Level goes up.
  3. 1-on-1 Matches allow you to play anybody, anywhere, in a SPINDEX rated match. Want to challenge your friend in the basement? Great, have fun. Record the result and your SPINDEX Ratings are instantly updated.
  4. SPINDEX Challenge Events allow organizers to play giant round robin events at their clubs, rec centers, schools, etc.
  5. Best of all, it's completely free for players and organizers

Looks lovely! I applaud every step towards a unified rating system, it makes conversations so much easier. And the fact that you don't need to play a sanctioned event might close the gap between "rating islands" (pools of players who only play amongst themselves).
Here in europe I don't think it will gain traction, but I wish the point system gets introduced next season in our new website, that would enable comparision to the german TTR points and through that to the USATT+SPINDEX ratings.

I think it would be nice if the search feature included an option to search by state/region and club since that info can be entered in the user profile.

Am I correct in assuming challenges must be made in person rather than digitally?
