  1. What do you think about folks who love to bet a little money to play matches?

It happens all the time in late nights in clubs that I go to. I don't like betting. But I occasionally find people that will bet on me. It doesn't really affect my play when I'm not the one who has something to lose
  2. Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced

The definition of beginner is easy Beginner: a person who has begun a course of instruction or is learning the fundamentals (taken from dictionary.com) Pretty much anyone that has just started out. Now, the definition of intermediate and advanced is where it gets tricky. Advanced would be...
  3. Penholders, I need your advice

I play penhold because shakehand hurts my wrist. Do what feels best for you. As long as you use RPB, it is not too different from shakehand.
  4. Table Tennis Scientific Method: pushing against/with the serve (crosscourt)

Science is built upon repeatable results. Whatever I say here is subjective, and players should always try things out for themselves and communicate their results with others. Everyone should know about the scientific method. It's grown to be a little bit more than the old 7-step method, so...

  6. Penhold coaches in NYC

I'm in AACCT as well. I can teach you penhold (although I wouldn't recommend it). Robert (the owner of the club) has coaching me coaching kids and random old people. I'm a 2200-2300 lefty penhold two-winged looper EDIT: I think Robert makes you charge $35 an hour. I don't really know the details
  7. Struggling to drive the ball after change to chinese rubber

Without a video, it's hard to say. In general, try using a bigger stroke and swing through the ball more. Chinese hard sponges require a bigger swing, since the sponge won't react much to a small swing.
  8. Problem Reverse Pendulum (to the forehand with backspin) - low spin and too high

You do need more racket speed to get more spin, but you have to be fast without pushing the ball forward too long. Also, for your serve being too high, there can e multiple causes 1. Your contact point is too high. Usually, this isn't a problem if you are experienced. 2. You are serving it...
  9. Service grip

Try making a video of your grip and your serve
  10. Forehand topspin feedback wanted and general feedback is most welcome

I feel that you are afraid to hit hard on the forehand sometimes. I think your feet should be wider apart, since you seem pretty tall. But I think other than that, your forehand loop doesn't seem to bad. You should definitely try using it more often.
  11. Tips for forehand topspin/loop

Starting position depends on the spin of the ball and on the height of the ball. If the ball is of net height and backspin and long, try starting close to knee height and swing up to the ball. Don't swing too far back for this one or you won't get the right contact for spinning the ball. Net...
  12. Tips for forehand topspin/loop

do you have any specific questions? Asking for something so broad is like asking for an entire library. I happen to be a (lefty) penholder who used to use skyline 3 neo.
  13. Serving short with a lot of underspin/backspin

How are you doing your serve right now? do you have a video of you just practicing the underspin serve? from what I saw from your latest video, it seems that you aren't even trying to make underspin.
  14. Developing an offensive style as a beginner

Reminds me of one of my early threads https://www.tabletennisdaily.com/forum/showthread.php?13149-Change-the-short-term-mindset I think, first, the player has to first understand this very concept. Tell them that in order to improve, they will be missing shots. many, many shots. I pretty much...

  16. I qualified for College Nationals, help

The DHS skyline that I usually use didn't pass the racket inspection, so I had to use a friend's hurricane. I did not adjust to the rubber very well :( I didn't give up, I missed three forehand openers. Funny that you said that my backhand was weaker, but actually it was pretty consistent...

  18. Just curious how many Penholders are on TTD?

Your question depends on what level you consider amateur is. If you don't plan to play in tournaments, do whatever you want. If you plan to play in tournaments, definitely learn RPB, since TPB has limitations that can be abused by other players. Backhand is becoming and more important as the...
  19. I qualified for College Nationals, help

You got me good :P I hate it when others go down-the-line But, as I have observed from righty-righty gameplay, pivoting and using the forehand down-the-line to the opponent's forehand seems to happen quite a lot to win points. Do you righties find this surprising? I want to learn beforehand in...
  20. I qualified for College Nationals, help

As curious question, how much do down-the-line attacks bother you in general? From a lefty? or from a righty?
