  1. How to pull out string inside the middle of the net?

Guys, in this particular situation, the string is around halfway/two-thirds to the other side. I don't think that needle/paper clip will be long enough, sadly. I'll try the finger pinching method. It's definitely going to take a long time
  2. How to pull out string inside the middle of the net?

So a lot of nets have a string that goes through the top of the net to keep the net tight. Unfortunately, one end of the string on one of the nets in my university is inside the middle of the net, making it very difficult, if not impossible to pull out. Do you guys have any advice on what to do?
  3. I am blaming myself in matches, how do I stop?

I do self criticism when I play all the time. However, you have to be constructive about it; don't just insult yourself each time. I see that you're still young, so I understand how easy it is to get salty and cursing yourself out, but it's not like that really helps. So I guess the first step...
  4. Just curious how many Penholders are on TTD?

On the side view, do you see how his paddle went from / to | ? That's where the speed came from. Wrist is involved there. I do the same thing to get a fast pendulum serve.
  5. My new table tennis youtube channel!

Oh hey Keenan! I think I've played with you before in Robert's club in Flushing. I'm the lefty penholder that's like 2150. Good luck on your videos. A life of a youtuber is not an easy one
  6. Fair handicap for men and women?

I think the context of the original question is flawed. Women only have a disadvantage at the very top level of play. As for competitions lower than that, a handicap isn't really necessary. As for the other people talking about rating on this thread, a lot of the competitors in the US play...
  7. Are styles conforming and hurting the sport?

Although there are some really great rallies that are produced by the top players, the one style of play I think is a little unhealthy for the sport, as is the Chinese dominance over the sport. The consistency of the style seen in top level play and the way it smothers the other styles of play...
  8. Discussions about something people always look over

You can do practice matches and do it 100% seriously. If you can't get serious enough, put actual stakes, like a small bet of some sort. You have to learn to be focused on your gameplay and minimize your unforced errors. If you do that, you will be much more confident with your game, giving you...
  9. Serve for a lefty

Hello, I'm a lefty. I mostly use pendulum serves, so my most common serves against righties are short underspin to the forehand, long fast light side-underspin to the backhand, long side-topspin to the backhand, short side-topspin to the forehand, and extremely wide sidespin to the forehand...
  10. Just curious how many Penholders are on TTD?

It will really depend on your opponent. If you are playing at high levels, you will find yourself forced to use backhand flips more to receive serves, since your forehand is much more restricted when it comes to short balls. It's not that looping down the line serves with your forehand is bad...

  12. What would a championship winning penholder have to be like today?

I think there was some data out there that supported that players that were better at blocking tended to do better in matches. Although blocking is replaced by close table counter, there is still some truth in it, that being able to deal with attacks is a very necessary skill. Even with...
  13. Is trying to play a defensive/chopper style under 2000 USA basically worthless?

I know a guy that climb to 2000 level by playing as a chopper. Sho Miyazaki. I'll ask him to read and reply to this thread. I've seen him play and improve over the years. I wouldn't say that being a chopper is worthless in this range. It's simply that there are other really easy ways to win...
  14. Don't gamble in TT, it can go badly [video]

Lol. I remember one time Robert Chen bet on my loss while I was losing 8-3 in a game. I won that game 11-9 :P
  15. The big TT dictionary thread

I'll try to provide the Mandarin translations: FH - 正手 BH - 反手 penhold - 直拍 shakehand - 横拍 blade - 板 sponge - 海绵 rubber - 胶皮 racket - 球拍 smooth rubber, inverted - 反胶 long pips - 长胶 medium pips - 生胶 short pips - 正胶 antispin - 防弧胶 spin - 旋转 topspin - 上旋 backspin - 下旋 sidespin - 侧旋 no spin - 不转...
  16. BH flip vs short serves. Going with the spin or against. Does it matter to you?

Of course not. You have to be very precise when you are performing shots over the table, which requires that you read the serve. Think about it this way, does forehand looping the serve replace reading spins?
  17. BH flip vs short serves. Going with the spin or against. Does it matter to you?

Exactly. It's the same concept as doing it on the forehand. As a lefty, it's like forehand looping a lefty's pendulum serve.
  18. BH flip vs short serves. Going with the spin or against. Does it matter to you?

It depends on which sidespin. If it goes with the natural backhand sidespin, I'll go with it. If it's the other sidespin, I'll override it with topspin. EDIT: I am left-handed as well. I do not contact the ball where the blue line is. Instead, against a short sidespin serve from a right...
  19. Professional Player Lifestyle

There are some videos online that show some of the daily lives of the Chinese players. We can't answer all of your questions though. Here is a play list that show some of the players. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLIl_mJ3zK7B--M8rjqMyIx4AIqNHsWSru Here is a video of one of Xu...
  20. Daily Table Tennis Chit Chat

I don't think I've ever posted about my day before on this thread. I played a guy named Kiki today at Robert Chen's club, who had 2 paddles: one paddle had short pips long pips, the other paddle had short pips antispin. He was better than I thought and won the first game. Afterwards, I...
