The simple answer is personal preference. You do what feels natural to you. Nowadays I prefer loose grip. I think loose grip is more important if you use TPB instead of RPB.

Curled is better for me. As the name suggest, it's penholder grip, so you hold it like you're holding a pen, which is with curled fingers.

I'm a one-sided flat hitter SP penholder (with twiddling LP). TPB with SP is very good for block and punch. Once you get good, you can punch any high ball, and direct it anywhere on the table.
