Why not try a more linear, easier setup as you write that you're trying to develop your technique. Bouncy tensor rubbers will not make it easy for you to get the right backhand technique. The Korbel blade could be great for this, and look for non tensor rubbers instead. These will make you do...

You should get yourself some Chinese tacky rubbers and a controllable blade. There are tons of different setups from really cheap like €30 and of course you get a bit higher performance and quality if you spend a little more. What is your budget?

These sponges have really large pores. It could be that you didn't use enough glue on that side. I should re-glue and try again :)
