I'm wondering if the following trick would work: Wrapping the head with a towel or some type of fabric (in order to protect it), leaving the handle "unprotected" and then put it in the microwave for a few seconds. Would that heat the handle and soften the glue or would destroy the whole blade?

Well, I wouldn't put the handle in boiling water under no circumstance. Firstly, the blade wood underneath will "swell" and secondly the steams from the boiling water will damage the head. If you want to change the handle, go to professional a carpenter that will do it for you.

Well another great advantage of glue sheets, is that they do not leave any glue residue on the sponge, so you can easily try the same rubbers on another blade. With glue, you have to remove the glue from the sponge first (unbelievable hassle), before you try used rubbers on another blade.
