  1. WTT Contender Almaty 2024 Sep 3-8

Odo/Yokoi mounted a comeback down 0-2 to pull to 2-2, but cratered in game 5. They'll have to settle for bragging rights over Nagasaki/Kihara... for now.
  2. WTT Champions Macao 2024, 9/9-15

Hirano has the toughest R32 of the Japanese women. She faces CXT who has a 5-0 record vs. Hirano. Miwa has a good draw, but I don't know her physical condition having lost to Asuka Sasao. Tomo vs. Matsushima in 1st round. They split 2 matches this year.

Japanese WD SF winners get pizza!
  4. WTT Contender Almaty 2024 Sep 3-8

Abyell takes the singles. Mallets take the doubles. I guess "Victory" match to conclude in real T.League Nov. 9 when the 2 teams meet. Just need a pair of players from these 4 to play singles .... Come on T.League ... make it happen!
  5. WTT Contender Almaty 2024 Sep 3-8

Just had a chance to watch this. Great comeback by Japan saving 4 match points against them. Great situational awareness from Odo:
  6. WTT Contender Almaty 2024 Sep 3-8

Tomorrow we get a T-League team match played out at Contender Almaty. Kinoshita Abyell doubles pair Kihara/Nagasaki vs. Nippon Paint Mallets doubles pair Odo/Yokoi and singles match between Nagasaki and Yokoi.
  7. WTT Contender Almaty 2024 Sep 3-8

Make that 3-0. Can't give your opponent a free game :ROFLMAO:
  8. WTT Contender Almaty 2024 Sep 3-8

Shi Xunyao 3-0 over KM. KM's stroke seems too long to me for being that close to the table. SXY strokes are compact yet powerful. With Miwa out, SXY looks to be a lock for the top half. Bottom half is open: Nagasaki, Yokoi, Chen Yi, QTY are contenders to come out of the bottom half.
  9. WTT Contender Almaty 2024 Sep 3-8

Kudos to Yuta Tanaka for beating Liang Yanning (CHN) 3-2,12-10. Not only did he fought off LIang, he fought off the assistant umpire who at 2-2, Tanaka up 6-2 faults him twice in a row. I'm not sure what the reason was... possibly hiding serve, but nothing egregious and nothing different from...
  10. WTT Contender Almaty 2024 Sep 3-8

I wonder what the thinking was with both Miwa and Kihara entering this tournament. It ends on Sept 8. Champions Macau starts on Sept 9. I wonder if they had assurances from the tournament director at Macau to schedule their matches in the latter stage of R32. Still not much time to rest/prepare.
  11. WTT Contender Almaty 2024 Sep 3-8

Although she wasn't able to beat the very top players at the selection trials, at times she gave them really tough matches (ex: 2023 Zennoh Cup Hiratsuka: R16 3-4 Hayata (-6, 7, -9, 5, -7, 5, -15)) And she's improved considerably since then as have others such as Odo and Hashimoto.
  12. WTT Contender Almaty 2024 Sep 3-8

Anne Uesawa beats Elena Zaharia of Romania 3-0 in the qualifiers and now beats Adina Diaconu also of Romania 3-0 in R32 of main draw.
  13. WTT Contender Almaty 2024 Sep 3-8

I think it's a combination of familiarity with Odo's game plus taking longer to adjust to playing internationally. They both have the same coach. And Yokoi taking down 4 CNT players in a row at Feeder Muscat shows what she's capable of. Good to see the progress from both of these players.
  14. WTT Contender Almaty 2024 Sep 3-8

Yokoi beat Hirano 3 times last season. No one wants to lose 3 times in a row especially when you're on the National Team and the other player is a NT candidate.
  15. JTTA: Selection System to be Revamped for Paris 2024

Yokoi just soundly beat Odo 3-0 at Contender Almaty. There's going to be massive competition for that 3rd spot at LA 2028: Hirano, Kihara, Odo, Yokoi, Nagasaki, Ito?, and maybe some other dark horses (4 yrs is a long time).
  16. WTT Contender Almaty 2024 Sep 3-8

Great 3-1 win for Miyu over 22 year old from China, Li Yake. Miyu still needs to improve her consistency in rallies, but this is a positive step for her.
  17. JTTA: Selection System to be Revamped for Paris 2024

Assuming Hayata fully recovers from injury, I think she's either number 1 or 2 by 2028. She completely dominated the Paris trials. She also currently dominates Miwa, though that could change in the next 4 years which is why I think Hayata could fall to number 2. Don't get me wrong, I am happy...
  18. JTTA: Selection System to be Revamped for Paris 2024

The doubles pairs will be at Contender Almaty. But it's a problem of having so much depth in Japan. Odo/Yokoi have won 4 doubles titles in 2024. I think the rationale behind Miwa/Kihara is that they beat SYS/WMY at the 2022 Asian Games (held in 2023) at the QF stage before losing to JJH/SYB...
  19. WTT Contender Almaty 2024 Sep 3-8

Vietnamese player, Nguyen Anh Tu, just got robbed. He was up 1-0, serving at 4-4. Then wins the next 2 points so Polish player Maciej Kolodziejczyk calls timeout. So it should be 6-4, but umpire incorrectly calls it 5-5. After timeout, players return with Nguyen protesting it should be...
  20. WTT Contender Almaty 2024 Sep 3-8

There is a cap. However, there is an exception in the WTT Series handbook that allows for additional players: "Where a Main Draw or a Qualifying is undersubscribed additional players or pairs in any pair combination can be accepted according to the ITTF TTWR or the Combined Pair Rank at the...
