  1. Favourite Table Tennis Player

I love the love for Xu Xin!
  2. Do we really want to score 3-0 wins differently from 3-2 wins?, For nerds only.

Ahah yeah the reactions have been pretty one-sided, it was a fair question to raise though.
  3. Do we really want to score 3-0 wins differently from 3-2 wins?, For nerds only.

Quite right, in all sports the best matches are the hard-fought ones. This shouldn't be penalised.
  4. Do we really want to score 3-0 wins differently from 3-2 wins?, For nerds only.

Heck no, I saw your post on the other thread and felt like commenting about it. Said thread is already going in all directions so I didn't, but as someone who always takes time to really get into a match I don't think that should be the case, without any need for crunching numbers or anything...
  5. OFF- blades. I need your help

Oh heyah, I used to come here quite a bit more about a year ago and I remember you were using a Virtuoso (+?) which you swore by. I've always been interested in these, just not buying any equipment in between moving countries and stuff. Any reason you've changed, and what differences do you find...
  6. OFF- blades. I need your help

Nice! Also I had never heard the term "fishing" in relation to TT (English not a native language) and had to look it up, as someone who loves countering more than anything I quite like it ahah - "come here, don't be afraid". ^^
  7. OFF- blades. I need your help

Pretty sure you can forget about the "off+" rating of your premade Stiga, at least when opposed to any custom-made bat assembled with genuinely fast components. Different worlds. Valid point about how things have changed, but if in doubt and since you plan to keep your blade for a long time...
  8. OFF- blades. I need your help

IVs has been around for ever (the Primorac too!) but that's rather a good thing in my opinion when considering blades, especially all wood - not infallible by any means, of course. Based on what you describe though maybe better keep it on the slower side (Donic Power AR is a good shout, I've...
  9. Another Rating System Much More Accurate Than the ITTF World Ranking

I understand what you meant with your questions now, I know this post is not directed to me but it shows the value of reading in more detail before jumping in.. You're right, of course.
  10. Another Rating System Much More Accurate Than the ITTF World Ranking

Oh sorry ahah I read as though you asked for more of the "why", not less! ERT is best suited to explain his own figures, but in any way it's more a case of applying a "system" (ELO, ITTF's own, /else) to the same data (the players' results), although they will use different factors or stats...
  11. Another Rating System Much More Accurate Than the ITTF World Ranking

Here is a good resource: https://lichess.org/qa/6/how-does-the-rating-system-work-on-here It's from a chess website and I don't feel I am pulling any plugs here, as as it all as free and openly run as you'll find [edit: not by me!]. (Props for chess too!) Just think of Fan ZhenDong and...
  12. Another Rating System Much More Accurate Than the ITTF World Ranking

I think again that it boils down to that "gut feeling". You may want rankings that give as fair an impression as possible of all player's relative strenghths, I'd imagine, especially (as mentioned by OP) if Olympics and such seedings will be based on that list. In this case ITTF encourage more...
  13. Another Rating System Much More Accurate Than the ITTF World Ranking

Hi, I think he meant that using ITTF's results and applying common probabilities analysis (much in the way ELO does), these figures would suggest that Dima will win five times out of six or so, which is obviously hard to believe and the basis for this very legitimate thread. It's like looking at...
  14. Chinese Trials for World Championships 2017

-Good on Fang Bo for getting a win. -I do hope Xu Xin keeps going in this way. Not sure about him playing "based on routine" (and I really do mean I am not sure, I don't watch enough TT and I'll take your word) but it's good to have a penholder and his reaching out wide on forehands is a joy to...
  15. Which song(s) do you listen to before matchplay??

Ahah the thing never ends, never thought about that. :D Not sure I'll ever be able to "not hear it", from now... As far as weird samples go, there's this (1:40 and at the end): Sponsor @Nexy.
  16. Which song(s) do you listen to before matchplay??

Woah, those don't come up very often!! Some cool songs in here. Personally, maybe this: Also, special mention to Suga_D for the mother of TT references... Freestyling on the block, now I chief rock!
  17. Longest Tournament Rally of all time!

Bend those knees! Fair play to the two of you... And those watching. :-P
  18. Tomokazu Harimoto leads 10-0 and then this happened!

Ok. Note that the man I mentioned was quite old school, and so were the ones who had taught me to just not do that (as a kid especially, my first instinct sure would have been to go for the kill... I'm starting to wonder whether landing the serve despite the wild swing wasn't a case of conscious...
