  1. Form is simply a means of consistency (a physics based approach)

i would say that contact point is quite important. you can have the same racket motion on two different contact points and have very different results. obvious, i know, but id say it's just as important as racket-motion-wrt-ball
  2. Alternative training techniques.

just found this, very interesting. i wanted to mention before but forgot, what he does at 5:58 is another concept called anti rotation, aka stability, which i'm sure is super helpful
  3. Form is simply a means of consistency (a physics based approach)

yeah these makes way more sense than my thinking. i guess this is why people do super spinny loops from ~table height, it's where the fastest point of the racket upwards is with respect to their body
  4. Form is simply a means of consistency (a physics based approach)

yeah i've reasoned that something about the ball falling after the peak (downward trajectory) will increase the delta between your upward brushing motion (tangential impulse on the ball) so you're able to pull the ball up easier? idk i haven't fully figured it out. i've heard the term "borrowing...
  5. Form is simply a means of consistency (a physics based approach)

100% agree with this. great way to learn the game (2-3 simple cues), but also a way to refine your game through how I can expand my range, limit test my placement, add deception etc. this is my way of reducing it down to simple variables: isolating it to the interface between racket and ball...
  6. Form is simply a means of consistency (a physics based approach)

yeah totally agree on the automatic applications, this is too hard, would not be for real time analysis. one note, racket angle doesn't translate to how the velocity is split by the tangent vs normal. i'm just referring to the tangential and normal impulse imparted to the ball, which is a...
  7. Alternative training techniques.

yeah absolutely, i wouldn't have learned about it if i only sticked to ping pong (only understood after i started playing volleyball on the side). Definitely wish i knew this when i was younger too. For me now it's mostly a way to mitigate injury ;)
  8. Form is simply a means of consistency (a physics based approach)

great point! i get your drift ;);) I would say the end state of "better driver" is a bit too general. Let's instead pose a specific case: E.g. driving a car in snowy conditions, i attempt to take a turn and I slide, resulting in a wide turn. Knowing that objects in motion tend to stay in...
  9. Form is simply a means of consistency (a physics based approach)

yeah absolutely, this is mostly when I'm in the lab/coaching/working on my form, definitely not real time. the mental cues help with turning the lab setting into real time reminders.
  10. Form is simply a means of consistency (a physics based approach)

I'm posting here mostly to jot my thinking down and see if others have had similar ideas. I've found that reducing ping pong to a simpler physics model has helped me understand the game way better. Note that I'm ~intermediate and this is intended for beginner / intermediate level. Given an...
  11. Alternative training techniques.

I quite like this topic – in recent months i've redirected my training (non-ping pong) for purely improving my game (and tangentially, aesthetics). all of the above mentioned for sure plays a huge role. One thing I emphasize is unifying the muscles in the body to act in concert, rather than at...
  12. ITTF Men's and Women's World Cup Macao 2026, 3/30-4/5

Okay this was the best session i've ever watched, including WTT. ITTF really stepped up their game with production levels. last year it sounded like the microphone was from the 40's and it just felt janky. Why do we opt for drawing the bracket? I get it makes for exciting matches but it just...
  13. Steve Dainton: "We want our athletes to earn what they deserve, but..."

i think one thing that wtt can definitely use is showing the actual commentators between matches, and let them run analysis and replays. they need to be the ones that bring deeper discussion of the sport to the people watching. things like tactics, types of serves, headfakes, so many things that...
  14. Steve Dainton: "We want our athletes to earn what they deserve, but..."

another example is ultimate frisbee. it struggled for a while but they put together a pro league (UFA fka AUDL). it still struggles. though, i remember getting excited when a frisbee play would be featured on ESPN top 10. can WTT send in a clip when kanak scores a hype point? lol. same feeling...
  15. Steve Dainton: "We want our athletes to earn what they deserve, but..."

this is a very interesting question - the west is so ingrained in their traditional sports mostly because it's been around longer. sports fans now are fans because they grew up watching. any new pro sport will be hard to break into mainstream (even with pickleball's popularity, still hard to get...
  16. Europe Smash Sweden August 14-24 2025

    TRULS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  17. Europe Smash Sweden August 14-24 2025

zooming out, i must say this event is the most exciting in a while. wtt getting everything right: commentary, TTR, camera angles are getting better, youtube videos are prompt (i'd rather have full matches before highlights but i get their reasoning, highlights are catered to the masses)
  18. Best matches of contemporary table tennis?

this one comes to mind for me
