Updated: 29 December 2019
The yearly affair is back again, only that it will be held between 1 January to 4 January 2020 this time. The World Team Table Tennis Championships 2020 is scheduled for 22 to 29 March 2020, Busan.
Singles Format
There will be two stages. Stage 1 adopts the elimination set-up instead of round-robin as used in previous versions – i) best of 7 games and; ii) match-ups based on seedings (unsure how they are seeded but probably WR). This leaves 6 players by the first round and will repeat for another cycle so that only 3 players remain.
These three players will then proceed to stage 2 (round robin) which is the real challenge IMO. Clearly, the winner will emerge when one has won two matches in a best of 7 games format. However in the event that they each has one win and one loss (and this is where things get interesting), they will play for another round – this time for only 1 game per match. If there is no clear winner again (i.e. one win and one loss each), the third round will see them start from 5 points each (1 game per match and played till 11 points at least), 8 points each in the fourth round if it comes to that (1 game per match and played till 11 points at least) and 10 points each for the fifth round if it comes to that (1 game per match) and so on until someone finally snags two wins.
Men's Team
Ma Long; Xu Xin; Fan Zhendong, Lin Gaoyuan, Liang Jingkun, Zhao Zihao, Xue Fei*, Zhou Qihao*, Zhou Kai*, Xu Chenhao*, Ma Te*, Zhang Yudong*
*These six emerged victorious from the initial stage of selection which comprised 23 players. In order of final ranking: [SUB]Wang Chuqin (20W 2L but serving his suspension)[/SUB], Xue Fei (17W 5L), Zhou Qihao (15W 7L), Zhou Kai, Xu Chenhao, Zhang Yudong, Ma Te, [SUB]Fang Bo, Xiang Peng, Yan An, Xu Yingbin, Zhou Yu, Xu Haidong, Zheng Peifeng, Yu Ziyang, Zhu Linfeng, Sun Wen, Liu Dingshuo, Xia Yizheng, Yu Heyi, Ren Hao, Yan Sheng, Sun Jiayi[/SUB]
Women's Team
Ding Ning; Chen Meng; Wang Manyu; Sun Yingsha; Zhu Yuling; Chen Xingtong; Wang Yidi; He Zhuojia; Gu Yuting; Liu Fei; Zhang Rui; Qian Tianyi
As expected, there are three pips players (half-long pips He Zhuojia, short-pips Zhang Rui and Liu Fei who also uses pips but to chop). Liu Shiwen has withdrawn following a foot injury.
Only the winner is guaranteed a spot for WTTTC 2020. Seems like the other four will be picked by the coaches. According to the prospectus on the ITTF website, "final entries will be open from Saturday 14 December 2019 and the closing deadline is Friday 17 January 2020, 23:59 GMT".
Mixed Doubles
Two stages once more. Stage 1 is essentially the same as the Singles – i) elimination and; ii) best of 7 games but only for one cycle as that will already leave 3 pairs standing. Stage 2 again emulates the Singles, which is round-robin among the 3 pairs but played to the best of 5 games. The winning pair needs to seal two matches once again. In the event of a tie, the rumble resumes and each subsequent round will get shorter (1 game per match played to 11 points at least; 1 game per match played to 11 points at least but each pair starts with 5 points; 1 game per match played to 11 points at least but each pair starts with 8 points) until a winner emerges.
Pairings: 1) Xu Xin/Sun Yingsha; 2) Ma Long/Ding Ning; 3) Fan Zhendong/Gu Yuting; 4) Lin Gaoyuan/Wang Manyu; 5) Liang Jingkun/Chen Meng; 6) Yu Ziyang/Zhu Yuling

Singles Format
