One ply cpen rackets play great. They feel amazing. There are a few downsides though. The first is, as you said, they are better when you are only putting one rubber on them because they are very thick and pretty heavy. The second is the price. That one is not such a big issue. But when you combine it with the third issue, it becomes a problem. The third issue is that they break very easily. Because they are one ply, they have a tendency to simply split down the grain of the wood. Sometimes it happens for no apparent reason. If I only knew one person that this happened to, I would not think too much about it. If I only knew two people this happened to I might still think it was an odd coincidence. But, knowing several people who it happened to multiple times rather than just once, I researched and found that this frequently happens to one ply Hinoki blades. When you have only one rubber on the blade you know right away that it has happened, but if you have rubber on both sides, there is an added problem that it takes a little while to figure out what on earth is wrong with your setup and why your loops don't seem to be working properly. I have a friend who is a pretty high level player who had that happen to him in the middle of a match in a tournament and he did not figure out what had happened and why he was playing so badly until after the match was over and he realized his blade was just being held together by the rubber.
So, for many people, a blade that is really expensive that could break after a few uses, would not be ideal. But, if you have something good as a backup and really want a one ply Hinoki blade, nothing plays quite like one. They really do feel amazing.
