A jump in skill level when changing equipment?

I forced myself to finally use my short pips penhold. The ability to smack any high ball was phenomenal. I could even feel my ball punching over the net even as I hit squarely on the white fabric edge.

So I played matches. With some adjustment, I literally mopped most of my opponents. My nemesis? Nearly always two points short. I could even stand toe to toe against a state player which I lost previously without scoring one point on the board! Granted, he missed some of his loops due to the minimal backspin I impart with pips.

Is this just a normal equipment switch thingy? Or have I just found my playstyle and simultaneously skyrocketed from lower intermediate to being a top club-level player?

Congratulations!

I am a conventional two side inverted player and has been grievously defeated by pips-out player. Being bitter, nauseated at it, lament at it, sulk and overall in despair because of it, I went to a corner to sulk contemplating my life choices.

A veteran uncle player who uses one side short-pips and one side long-pips came to me, sit next to me and told me something. It goes like this.

You know, Gozo, the most venomous player out there are not pips, but rather you guys, two sided inverted. I was shocked. How could it be? He must be messin' with me, right?

He said, you play in the local league don't you.... when was the last time you see a pips out player win any of the championship? Sure they survive into some QF or perhaps SF, but have you seen pips win the final prize? Even if yes, it is rarely...

Pips player win because of our material and it is also our curse as it is also our limitation whereas inverted has no limitation. Once the inverted figure out how to win pips, all our advantages will be gone.

If You are not used to play against pips (even short), you will have some problems to start with. You will get less spin back so the bounce will be different. Once he gets used to this the situation will be turned again...
