such is the bane for us amateur club level player who does not train everyday and only do this twice a week two hours session.

You focus on one thing and another falls apart... sigh...
Ha, tell me about it! It always feels like 2 steps forward 1 step back. Just today, I felt that my BH went back to an overly brushy stroke after spending the past couple of weeks focusing more on improving my FH. At least it was fairly quick to switch it back. FH though is still an ongoing process. For the first time it felt really natural executing the new changes, but only in practice. As always, it'll take a while before it shows up in games.

I think your BH is actually fine, I think it's got a good foundation. Most amateurs have issues with doing too much brushing, on both sides, and you started by learning hitting which is how pro coaches start with the kids, so I think that's the right way to go. Your FH loop already looks pretty solid.

As for me, I glued some new rubbers onto my FZD and to be honest, I don't really like the H3/FZD combo. Maybe the pros boost them to hell, but the throw is just too low for me, the trajectory is too flat, and I have to resort to a more brushy stroke at least on the FH side. I flipped the racket around and used the D09C side, man it felt like easy mode! If I switch back to the FZD, I think I'm gonna use D09C on the FH side. Still a bit undecided on the BH rubber though, maybe D09C, but also possibly D05 as it's softer and faster, with a relatively high and shallow throw that gives me a bit more safety as well. I'll try the D09C/D05 combo first.

For now though, I'm gonna stick with the Q968, got a local tournament coming up in a couple weeks, don't wanna quite change anything yet.

The story continues...

So we took the top of the league and that makes the team eligible for promotion (yay!). Done deal, right?

Nope. One team member expressed the desire to stay in the same division. The other team member has gone off the radar (understandably) after a weird communication error resulted in him not being able to play the final match.
I can't move to the other promoted team because one of them has moved and the other doesn't have enough time to play a proper season.
I'm finding myself trying to scrape together a team now. I found one reserve player so far, and there's solid potential for another one to play at least several matches but not all season. Also side-eyeing my old club even though that would be quite shit both in terms of the home playing night being bad for me, and everything is at least a half hour further away.

Thanks Dingyi,

For your words of encouragement.

Speaking of my fh loop, I only managed to make one single miserable fh loop during the entire match and it earned me a point from that.

My point again illustrated my mind was so focused on serving that I had forgotten to fh loop even when opportunity arises.

Too tunnel visioned!

Started testing out Tenergy 64 since it'll be a bit before I do tournaments again. It's really fun on the FH side and I'm trying to get used to it on the BH. Nuzn 50 has been really solid on my BH, so I like the option of using both on either side.

Working on technique and physical therapy to avoid being in pain when training and eventually doing long days/multiple events for tournaments.

Oh yea, I have the same issue. It took me many months to start remembering to loop with my BH, and that's with significant focus on using my BH loop in game situations. I've noticed that there's no point in focusing on technique during game situations, things happen too fast for you to remember it. The only thing I focus on during games is now more general stuff, like be aggressive on FH/BH, or more commonly, move my feet at all times. Footwork and body positioning in general is basically what I mostly focus on now when I play a match. I've accepted that my technique changes will just need to show up on its own through a lot of reps in training.

Things are starting to fall into place now. I'm getting some backspin serves to come back into the net, although still very inconsistent. Also hitting some of my staple big shots now, including one schnasty RPB powerloop onto a long backspin serve, lol.

Progress is honestly much faster than I expected.

Seems I got a bit cocky, because today was abysmal!

Nothing on the serves, tons of serve misses, backhand not working, forehand missing especially against easy popups; but at least my forehand block is more consistent...

One of those days.
This is all part of the process, progress isn't linear and temporary setbacks are not only normal, they are part of how you make progress.

Guys, I think I've finally figured it all out. FH and BH, I think I can play the way I want now!

On the FH side the main missing piece appears to be avoiding excessive backswing, especially with the arm. This allows me to always catch the ball a bit in front of the body and before the ball falls too low. I've made this a focus of my training for a couple weeks now, and surprisingly it's already starting to make a difference in my game. Usually FH training takes a looooong time to show up in my game, so I'm very glad to see this.

On the BH side, I finally figured out the proper way to loop. Starting off I was doing a very brushy move, and as I've mentioned in recent posts I've been trying to add more hitting into my stroke. I've tried 2 methods for this, one is to use kind of a BH flick (the classical pancake one, not the banana one), where you kind of approach the ball from the bottom, then flip the racket over as you contact the ball so finish with the racket facing down. This results in a very up-then-down kind of stroke, which worked reasonably well in practice against backspins but has rather inconsistent contact particularly against topspin balls due to the amount of movement required near contact.

The 2nd method is to swing the racket like how you would backhand slap someone. The arm motion is fairly smooth from slightly down to slightly up. This results in much more reliable contact, but I either have too much hitting or too much brushing depending on my racket angle. Against topspin it seemed to work reasonably well, but against backspin this was very difficult to loop drive--either I'd have no arc and safety or it was a very brushy stroke.

The last couple of days I started focusing more on timing. I've been hitting BH shots too far forward of the body. That's something my coach and I have been focused on fixing and I've made a lot of progress in it, so I wanted to start applying it against backspin as well. While doing that, all of a sudden I came upon a new BH swing technique as well. I'd basically approach the ball similar to technique #2, but then flip my arm swing downward as I contact the ball (but importantly don't change the racket angle with my wrist). This is resulted in very consistent contact, hitting deeply into the racket even with my Q968/D09C combo, yet also with the feel of extremely good brushing and spin. For the first time ever, I could hit powerful BH loop drives against backspin in practice again and again, and more importantly, I could really visualize the trajectory of the ball as I contacted it! I then tried the same technique against topspins, and it works just as well!

It's still early days and even in practice I still need a few tries before I find the feeling, but may when I get into my rhythm does it feel good! Piaah piah piah piah the balls just get crushed one after another! It also looks good too! I always wondered how the pros finish their BH loops with the racket almost perpendicular to the ground, well this is how. I've tried to replicate it by approaching the ball with a fairly open racket, but it just results in too much hitting, low arc, and low safety. But if you add a downward motion by the arm swing at contact, all of a sudden you add in the arc and spin without sacrificing the solid contact and speed.

Yeah, it's just how it is. Not the first time that happens. I think a big part of it is fatigue: I can't really play hard for 3 days in a row yet.

I used to play hard 5 days in a row, but that's just not possible right now. It probably won't be possible even next year unless I start taking it very seriously, which I doubt.

Still a bit shocking how bad I was playing. I resorted to doing long top-side hook serve variations, because at least they allowed me to get into a hitting rally where I could win some points with speed and not worry about popups so much. Disgusting!

Oh man, I am so sick of the EJ stuff!

I'm longing back to the times where I had one bat, and put on basically whatever rubber was reasonable to use and best priced at the time I had to change. Damn the information overload, damn for having enough spare money to buy crap I don't need. Damn it all.

Honestly I don't even know what I'm looking for right now besides something that "feels good". Going around in circles about using Chinese FH or not, with or without carbon, 5ply, 7ply, inner, outer... I know that certain mixes just don't match very well and others do but the sheer amount of combinations is ridiculous.

My 2nd session with Dignics 09c last night. I've come to the conclusion that it's a young man's rubber. At the start of the night it's great, but by the end when I'm getting tired, my shot quality goes way down.

I'm loving the Mantra Pro M on my backhand, so i think I'll replace the Dignics with Mantra Pro H.

Fextra 5X Inner arrived. Can't glue rubbers on yet, waiting on varnish, but in the hand it feels much better to me than the Stratus Power Wood. The dimensions of the handle should be smaller according to online info, but it doesn't feel so. It feels much more secure in my hand. Online information about dimensions is entirely wrong. Here are my measurements:

SPW, Fextra 5X
Length from rubber bottom guide: 99mm, 99mm
Span at wing: 27mm, 27mm
Span at end: 33mm, 35mm
Chord at wing: 21mm, 23mm
Chord at end: 21.5mm, 22.5mm
Handle shape is more square, handle shape is more round

My hands are small for a westerner.

EDIT: To whom it may concern: 1356Hz

Hit a bit with long pips for the first time. Yinhe 955 Black in 0.7mm. Very cheap entry level version.

Impressions:

Very slow. Tons of net mistakes on passive shots. 1.5mm sponge may be better for me personally.

Forehand loops and for the most part drives are nigh-impossible, it tends to fall off with like a 200deg throw angle, ridiculous. Backhand flick doable but seems like no-spin. Smashes nigh-impossible for me right now. Punches more doable, very weird especially if low.

I can also do backhand loops, which suggests that my contact point might be too much to the side, because while they're similar to the flicks and come out no-spin, it does clear the net.

Short push extremely hard, tends to pop up. I understand now why choppers twiddle to inverted to push dead balls. You need to really chop into it which runs the risk of it being long.

Chopping extremely easy if in the pocket, they lend well to it. Can get quite heavy spin, and mine is only 0.7mm sponge. I wonder how it'd be with 1.5mm or more. Chops hard to get back if arm is outstretched and lacking power, inverted better for this. Chop quality dramatically lower if taken near the elbow, so I'd try to do powerloops to a chopper's elbow if possible.

Blocks difficult/impossible if you're passive, but punching into it a bit results in a fairly effective ball. Is not threatening if blocked to the wide angles, although I think a more skilled user could make it so.

Very spin sensitive still, it's not how people describe them. If you passively receive spinny sidespin serves, it's gonna fly off into the court next to you. I feel like punching into it a bit makes it slightly easier than inverted, but ball quality is low.

I feel like it would be effective to take chops very early and try to push them short towards a chopper's pips side, hopefully causing a higher chance for a popped up push when they need to deal with moving to an awkward angle and twiddling at same time. I think it's also unlikely they will be able to attack with it unless they're highly skilled.

Welcome back OSPH
Domo arigato gozaimashita Senpai Takkyu_wa_inochi !!

Shhh! Don't tell anyone. I am on a secret Goon Squad mission in Hong Kong. I need to find the Director of the Hong Kong Goon Squad, Si-Hing JeffM, to fulfill my mission of getting a 9 points handicap from him!!!

........

The NYC Dept of Parks Recreation Center closed for renovation in 2021 or so. I haven't played TT seriously since they closed.

Renovation finally completed. About 2 or 3 years past projected finish date. But they didn't officially reopen. When they reopen, hope the schedule is like old schedule, 5:30pm to 9pm. Go play after work.

Hope the DTTers have been healthy and happy and all 2400+!!

I went for my 3rd practice in 4 days last night. I played a few sets and my legs felt heavy & i wasn't moving well. Dignics 09c is the most unforgiving rubber I've ever used and i really struggled with it last night for the above reasons.

I also found that when i played against the top players at my club, they could handle the 09c's spin so i was forced to play extra shots when they got my initial FH loop back. For this reason i don't think I'll get much advantage from using it.

My game is more speed based than spin based, so I've made the decision to sell the 09c to a clubmate.
