faulty durometer ?

Hi,

so I bought shore A durometer and got some interesting results. I read that table tennis comapnies use shore A or shore 0, but my glayzer reading on shore A is 24 and dignics 05 is 27. The difference of 3 degree was expected, but shouldn't the dignics be aroound 40 and glayzer 38 ?
Is this durometer faulty or is there other explanation for this ?

Here's the thing. Most sources that say Shore A for Butterfly and Shore O for ESN don't know what they are doing. They came to that conclusion most likely by looking at the so-called durometer conversion charts, hardness scale cross references etc., without understanding that different scales cannot be converted in that manner.

I've bought the same Durometer and have similar readings.
Moreover, if you take measurements from the same sponge at different points (i.e try at the center, then at the various points at the edges) you will get completely different readings. Total waste of money...

iiirc you can not correctly even read data with your durometer because the specification says that the material has to be at least 6mm thick or something, so whatever you are reading is including the topsheet and the underlying surface.

yeah, I wasn't happy about it also, need to press harder and just take average . It is pretty bad, but still I can see differences between harder and softer rubbers

actually I wanted to measure mostly heavier mk fx and lighter mk rubbers to see what the difference will be. I thought about it after receiving same weight mk and mk fx

Two points. One, the scales are all different, so the measurements are only useful when using the same scale. This is particularly the case because hardness listed only applies to the sponge, and you have no way of measuring just the sponge. This leads to the second point, which is don't use a Shore A durometer. It has a tiny measuring probe, so whether you're measuring directly above a pimple or above a space in between will affect your measurement. Use a Shore C durometer instead. It has a larger probe, and will give you more consistent measurements.

First look into the User Manual, the instruction of device calibration. This should be a good help.
Again, be sure you get a thick rubber sample for testing. Combination of two sandwich sheets conjoined together makes the optimal test subject to proceed with.
