Hello Friends,

I have been reading some posts here about Target National and some their characteristics. Specially it came to my mind a recurrent comment about the low throw angle of this rubber.

The first think I have to tell you is: you are right, the throw angle of this rubber is low. I have being testing it for for more than 4 months and it is such a pity, because the rest of the characteristics as speed, spin, tackiness… are amazing

This is why I have being thinking how to improve the performance of this rubber in order to continue using this rubber.

Why I’m so attached to this rubber? Simple, it is cheap and the performance in terms of spin, touch and control is amazing.

Then I decided to try boosters on it. I tried different ones: bby oil, Falco long, Haifu, Revolution X-treme.

Conclusions:
  • Speed oriented performance: Haifu > Falco > Revolution > Bby oil
  • Spin performance: Falco > Haifu > Revolution > Bby Oil
  • Control performance: Falco > Haifu > Bby oil > Revolution

In general, as I said before, my only issue with Target National was the low throw angle. After applying Falco, this point increased amazingly. I could take balls almost touching the flor and putting them in to the table full of spin. Then, in this way, Falco was my perfect choice.

After 2 layers of Falco it feels alive but controlable and with good hand feeling. Even applying just one layer in a fast blade is enough for feeling the increase of the throw angle.

And what about the cake sponge at the moment of removing the glue form the rubber?

In this sense, you have to be careful. Put a layer of glue before the booster and do it slowly. I removed twice with out damaging the sponge. But it is true that this is not a totally hard Chinese sponge. This is why Falco long is also fitting, because the boosting effect last longer.

Hope this information was useful.

All the best.

Try the dense sponge Target 3 Silver package. With Haifu, it is excellent and much better than the cake sponge National version.

Hi, I didn’t know that exist this version. It is not commercialised in Europe yet, but when so will have access to it, I will do that. Thanks for the advice.
Which versions of target do you have access to?

I think the Target 90 is also quite good with haifu.

The biggest problem with Target series is that frustratingly low throw angle.

I think Target Pro 3 has the most normal angle, and Target 90 is 2nd best for throw angle and only slightly low.

The Target Pro Blue is quite low and annoying.

You guys know I like Sanwei Target National. So a few comments:

1) I like the low throw. I grew up playing Chinese rubbers (Friendship 729, Friendship Tackspeed 2000, Globe 999) so I am very confused why the complaint about the low throw. I like my topspin tight. Meaning enough arc to clear the net but not too much arc. Then with amount of spin that Chinese rubber generates, the ball hits the table fast and then slide downward. So sometimes the player blocking the ball completely miss the ball.

I on the other hand cannot make Tenergy 05 work for me on the forehand side. Plenty of players at the club use Tenergy 05 and they generate a lot of spin with it (you don't need tacky topspin to generate a lot of spin). Their balls have this high arcing trajectory and when it hits the table, it bounces even higher. I personally don't like it. I don't play this way.

So there is no solution for you. You might need to decide if you want to change your technique or your rubber. For example, Dima changed from Butterfly product to hurricane 3 blue sponge on the forehand side. And I think he tried it for a year and then gave up and went back to Butterfly? Now Dima probably practices 8 hours a day, 6 days a week so if he cannot adapt to Hurricane 3 to his liking then that says a lot.

Some rubbers just fit some people and the way they play. Those same rubbers might frustrate other players who play differently.

2) To explain TensorBackhand's comment, there is this "commerical orange sponge" of Sanwei Target National that costs dirt cheap, like $5 with $5 shipping fee or something like that. I have quite a few sheets of that.

there is this "higher grade blue sponge" of Sanwei Target National that costs about $15-$25 depending on where you source it. More expensive but not outrageously so.

TensorBackhand does not like the blue sponge at all. He actually likes the orange sponge.

I personally like the blue sponge A LOT..like a lot. I like the orange sponge ok. I can play with it but I prefer not to.

3) I am not sure about what Lazer is referring to. Incidentally tonight, I was at the club. My friends and I did an experiment. His Dignics 09c held the ball for less than a second, upside down. My Hurricane 3 neo provincial blue sponge held the ball for about a second. My Sanwei Target National Blue Sponge (I got mine for $30 from Megaspin) held the ball for 4 seconds. And we just did that experiment tonight.

The one that I used was the silver package that is the one that can be easily found in shops in Europe. And, as I say in the comment, this + booster increase a lot the performance in terms of throw angle.

Many people is speaking about the Target Pro 3, but for me it is not clear that boosting this sponge will have the same result, because of the kind of sponge.

I will consider to do the same test with it and get some conclusion comparing booth sponge.

All the best.

This is the version I have. I boosted the sponge and it had a strong reaction to booster. With booster, its bouncier than D09c, for reference.

I totally agree with you. Many of the SANWEI sponsored players love the low throw angle of the TN and they don’t use booster. In my case I have some issues with it, mainly because I come from a tensor rubber and, although I was working on my technique, I feel it was not enough for playing against defensive players.

I’m looking for a middle way, not extremely tensor angle performance and not the low one. This is why I find this combination of Target National with 1 layer of booster an excellent option in terms of control, spin, throw angle.

I would like to exchange more with you about TN, as you seems to have lot of experience with them.

Best regards.

I didn’t know this version. Seems like the same top sheet with different sponge. Just one question: when you said bouncier, do you refer mainly to speed or also throw angle? Regards

Bouncier refers to the speed. Unboosted, it is average speed similar to H3. With boosted, the speed increases greatly.

Separately, the throw angle is much higher than Target National and it is more similar to H3 throw angle.

This is my point, I think I’m looking for a higher throw angle but just a bit and not need more speed. This is why I think the combination of Target National blue sponge with one layer of booster is enough for me. Although that, I would love to test the one you show and see how the reaction works. Thanks for bringing new ideas here .

Did you compare them boosted? I’m wondering if there is somebody who can compare both boosted. If not, I can boost both and do a comparison
Yes, boosted exactly the same. What I find most mind boggling is that some people here describe Target National as being more tacky than H3. No way my sheet was about as tacky as a G09C.

But it is softening up a bit after being played with, so maybe I should be toned down a bit 😇, but it is nowhere near as spinny as an H3…

Cheers

Thanks for sharing it. I have seen some tests in which the tacky is similar. I wound not say one more that the other because depends the strength and pointing you use. The spin I would like also to test it in terms of lasting tackiness. Maybe the comments are connected also with that

OK, but I can not see any point where Target National is better…
