Interesting reading in this thread and also interesting how much the landscape has changed in 6 mths with WCQ📉, LSD📈 and FZD 🔃.
I guess my answer to the initial question is that nobody is as dominant as prime Ma Long was but being as good as him, as in could their best have beaten him on any given day, yes, definitely.
But maintaining a certain level over such a long period of time is real greatness, even if it doesn't define it.
LSD could go world no 1 and win most majors for 4 yrs including the next Olympics and ten fall off a cliff and never win another thing. Longevity wouldn't define him in that case but there'd be no doubting his greatness in such a case.
Same for FZD, career grand slam done and currently looks like we 'might' have seen the best of him. Never as dominant as Ma Long but still great!
I suppose it's Ma Longs longevity that sets him apart... similar with Waldner.
I think these guys get given the GOAT tag because of how long they did it for...
