Lighter BH rubber for CPEN setup

says Happy ;)
Hi everyone,
I’m currently using a Chinese penhold (CPEN) setup with the 729 Z1 blade (limba-sprouce-ayous core), with 729 taichi in FH and dignics 64 (1.7mm) in BH, my combo has solid feel. However, my overall setup is quite heavy (around 190g), and I’ve started to feel wrist fatigue during extended sessions, especially when using my backhand (RPB).

I’m considering switching to a lighter backhand rubber to improve balance and reduce strain. At the moment, I'm torn between:
  • Butterfly Rozena
  • Tibhar Crazy Bull
Could anyone share experiences or comparisons between these rubbers, particularly in terms of:
  • Actual weight (cut weight appreciated)
  • Durability and feel

Rozena is about the same with the other tenergy and dignics rubbers, about 45g cut on viscaria, so you won't see any difference. Don't know about crazy bull.

Look into the 729 sky wing, it's a classic choice for bh on cpen. Medium-hard Chinese sponge and tacky topsheet, but light and extremely stable. It was designed for this very purpose. There's also the focus 3 snipe, heavier but also excellent rubber for bh.

You are going to have a hard time finding something matching Dignics… Why not go down in thickness…

Cheers

My backhand game is not particularly strong — I mainly use RPB for occasional loops and flicks, but forehand is my primary focus. At this point, I don’t need for high-performance rubbers like Dignics on the backhand — I'd rather reduce the overall weight to improve maneuverability and comfort.

I can't believe how heavy this blade is, (my FL super LYJ is only 85gr)
Is there any way to lose weight?

pros prefer heavier blades.
you are able to find lighter versions - that will be a better solution to finding lighter rubbers.

Since you're already using min thickness rubber, and you don't really use your backhand, you might consider getting rid of it completely. There are a few options:

- Get rid of backhand rubber entirely and play TPB
- Replace rubber with short pips or long pips. These are lighter than inverted rubber and often have softer sponges. It also allows for the possibility of twiddling and being very disruptive.

You might also want to examine the weight of your blade, and try to find a lighter one. When you buy a blade from an online store, you can usually ask them to send you the lightest blade they have in stock.

Thanks, but I still need RPB for my backhand loop :D
I will reduce the weight of the taichi rubber on the FH side

The Pimplepark - Epos is really soft, light weight and tacky. It's available from 1.0-1.9mm.
Or like others have suggested. 729 - Focus III Snipe, 729 - Phoenix
Perhaps a softer rubber like Yinhe - Mercury III Euro or Yinhe - Mars III Euro could fit you. The 729 - Aurora Max Soft is more light weigt as well, around 42g cut.
A more def-like rubber is Giant Dragon - Submarine. I weighed a copy cut to 37g in 2.0mm.
But I think you should check out some other blades, like Palio - CAT for example. It's about 70g.

Maybe I will piss some people off here. But my advice is to switch to shakehand.

I used to play Jpen and then Cpen with RPB. When I played Cpen with RPB, the overall set up was just too heavy. Plus, the inverted rubber on the backside really makes it hard to grip the paddle properly (I sweat a lot). I switched to shakehand 6 years ago and problem solved!

If the OP wants to stick with Cpen, then I would recommend short pips on the backhand side, without sponge or with very thin sponge. The short pips will actually help you grip the paddle easier.

You can just sand the rubber under your fingers to make surface grippier. A also sweat a lot and make it with all my cpen setups. I can play without sanding rubber on 09c, but tensor rubbers like dignics 05, matra pro or DNA pro are just must sand if you want stable grip.

Also in my opinion it's easier to make your wrists stronger with exercise than try to find lighter backhand rubber. I play with 188 gr setups(YuanJian Ganjiang + YuanJian Zhantian + Battle 2 superselect) and it's perfectly comfortable. When i played Dynasty Carbon it was about 197 gr and it was a bit too much, but anything under 190 is definitely manageable with physical training. My Viscaria setup is 178 and it just too light for me i hate the feeling from it.
