Can anyone inform if there is a real difference between the two ?
in terms of playing differences , and balance, etc.

No, SG is just very slightly thicker, but shorter than LG, while flared is the smallest

It's just the handle size, although that may also change the balance of the blade. Regular FL is for smaller hands imo. I played with one and had to use grip tape for more bulk. I'm a normal guy that weighs like 73kg. SG is for normal sized hands. LG is for larger hands.

A user here posted this picture a while back when I inquired but I can't remember the thread. From left to right: SG, LG, Fextra, Yasaka Sweden, and regular FL. The SG is around the same size as a Fextra and Yasaka handle.

There is a real difference between reg FL and SG Special FL handles.
SG is significantly thicker than reg FL and is close to LG, although not that chunky.
SG is rounder than reg FL and reminds me of a ST handle with a slight flare. I like it
