Novel concept but I fail to see how this would be better performing than hardbat or even sandpaper. It might be better for longevity. The blades look very thick so I'm assuming they use very soft wood

Nah, we'd just start buying different blades with an infinite variation of hole sizes and shapes.

Nothing new indeed. Bare wood has been a legitimate option for playing the game till quite recently, I keep official rules edition of 1978 that includes the provision.
