From Liam’s POV can you give insight into the attributes he looks for in selection process?

From the outside looking in, he has used all types of equipment - koto & limba, ALC & ZLC, inner & outer, jap type & hybrid.

The only constant has been 7 ply and being a slim reaper!
What kind of inner carbon blade(s) has he played in the past? I'm not too familiar with him (i.e. his equipment choices) but seem to remember that he played:
- Korbel
- Viscaria
- Mizutani ZLC and
- his Victas signature blade (Limba + Zxion)

From TTGearLab, “After testing two versions – inner and outer – of ‘ZX-Gear’ series, Liam Pitchford finally selected outer-fiber version – ‘ZX-Gear Out’

Though yes he does seem representative of outer construction preference player.

Honestly I think it's mostly feeling based, he seems to prefer just trying things and seeing how they feel for him. I don't think he's too into the specifics of how the setup is comprised so much.

Absolutely correct. And the way a Pro understands the equipment feel is far far better than how a hobby player like me judges it. It comes to practicing with the same setup again and again for countless number of hours.
For me, I really cannot point out the differences which are way too pronounced with the ALC blades which I have. So it means, either they are all similar in feeling or my judgement is restricted.

Yeah and I think over time you kind of figure out which feel you like and which you don't, for example he ruled out inner layer blades straight away and he had some initial ideas about blade weight preference and rubber hardness etc you basically have to collect as much info as you can and look at how he plays and send some different things and leave the rest up to him to pick and choose :)

Where is Liam starting his racket combination from?

I say this as for me since the plastic ball my weakness is in defensive stability (or solidarity?)

Especially in blocking the first highly spun ball and getting that sinking feeling of being overmatched during BH to BH rally exchanges.

I’ve worked out min. koto or anigre hardness is a must for crispness/spin insensitivity and then building out from there. Short game is the last priority as that’s where I am most comfortable.

Some people are opposite, they build to have their strengths shine first.

So would be good to hear in as much detail on his thinking (without giving away trade secrets) and priorities in his current search for his Joola holy grail 😉

I think the same case was for Vladimir Samsonov. I think it was in TTD video of him or he said it somewhere, that he doesn´t care what material the blade is, but how does it feel.

I always feel good when getting a new setup. does that count?
