YEO Upgrade

Hi all, table tennis enthusiasts!
I want to talk about the Yasaka Ma Lin Extra offensive (yeah, again..).

I think the blade is a little outdated for the modern ball. Probably, it's everyone's consensus that for more advanced play it lacks power and support. My experience kinda confirms it too..I still can win games, but finishing the point with loopkill is not nearly as dangerous as with w968 or outer carbon blades and when playing back from the table the ball is a little too slow.

However, as a lover of Chinese penhold YEO I must say I am in love with the *feeling* this blade has. It's just outstanding feedback.

The question: what modern composition blade might be close to the feeling of YEO?
Maybe it's some other hardwood outer ply 7 ply blade?

I've tried 301x(FL) w968 (FL), 301 clone from Stuor (Cpen), but none of those come close in terms of the feeling.

What ply or part of YEO vibrates so satisfyingly, is it the top Walnut ply? Would other Walnut outer blades feel a little the same ? may be @hipnotic would add something to this thread/question.

The weight is around 85g for my piece and the rubber for FH is H3 NEO (2.1 national, 40 degrees), BH is H8 2.1 39 regular. Boosted.

Or maybe faster (thicker?) modern rubbers may fix the issue ?

YEO is fine for club games. Depends on how serious you are, you might want an ALC blade if you're playing a lot of higher level matches.

Nothing beats the nice feel of a 5-ply.

I recently changed from H3 to C55 on a slow blade, that saves me tons of recovery time, must faster attack and slightly less spin.

So options are:
  1. Change FH to D09C or C55 depending on your budget. BH to V15 sticky
  2. Change blade to Fan Zhendong ALC

Option 1 gives you better feeling than option 2. Option 2 is faster but the feel is still good

I have noticed that with YEO, it becomes better with your technique. If I need more power, I just put in more body and rotate more, as well as more explosively. Although recently, I have been thinking of making a switch to a Stiga Dynasty Carbon once and for all—apparently woody feel with good amount of extra speed that will serve a lifetime 🤔

I could still play with YEO for years, it doesn't really hold you back much, in my humble opinion, although I am also starting to feel its limitations. Seems like a better idea to invest into more advanced equipment early on than later, when muscle memory will start to settle down. Better to have equipment that improves alongside oneself

on my level it already does hold me back, I can feel that with a little bit more power I would definitely win against more experienced opponents. However the feel is incomparable
