Daily Table Tennis Chit Chat

Taking control of things is called leadership. You will see that trait in many people over time. And it will irritate the hell out of you as it does me, who is a slacker in many things. And it will irritate you even more when you keep realizing they are the ones getting ahead more often than not.

I am willing to accept leadership from a leader, but only in a situation where a leader is required. Not when the person is not a leader, in a situation where one is not required. :)

Hey, Yecats, let me see if I can clear up a few things.

What I did with the best blade thing was a practical joke. I was using it to lead up to the apology. Basically, I was saying, hey, now I remember.

As far as your thread. I made the comments I made because I wanted to participate in the thread and I participated in the way I felt was my perspective in the thread. I was not dismissive. I did not simply say, "this thread is dumb." I explained why I felt it was valuable to consider that there was no such thing as a greatest of all time.

However, I will go back and read the whole thread to make sure, but I don't think what you took issue with was my questioning the premise of the thread. I think where you felt offended was in my astonishment that you did not realize how good and how deep the Swedish team from the 80s-90s was.

My memory is, and I have not gone back to read it, so this is, truly from memory, that you asked if they were as deep as the China is today.

My first answer was some statistics on how many years they were in the finals of the WTTC and WTTTC and how many gold and silver medals they won.

Then you asked something that to me implied that you were questioning whether they had as many players not on the A team as China has in all their Provincial teams combined.

And my answer was that the population of Sweden in 2013 was roughly the same as the population of New York City. And that it was not really fair to expect for such a small country to haven that kind of depth since each of those Chinese provinces have at least as large a population as Sweden. But that Sweden's table tennis resources were as deep as a country that small could possibly be, or they would not have been able to dominate the world of table tennis the way they did.

Anyway, regardless of the details of the discussion, I can see how, my being surprised that you didn't realize how good Sweden was and my being further surprised when the first information about what a long period it was when they dominated the table tennis world, didn't help you understand just how good they were.

REGARDLESS of the details of the debate, my style of discussing and making my points is sometimes aggressive and pointed. I did not mean it to be personal. I was not meaning to make you feel bad or unintelligent. I was making a point strongly about what an amazing achievement I felt Sweden's total domination was.

Which year was it when they beat China in the WTTTC Finals 5-0?!!!!!! I have to say, I love that team. [edit: I looked, it was 1989, to me that is amazing.]

But I am sorry if I offended you in the process of DEFENDING MY TEAM. [emoji2]

Again, Yecats, it is good to have you on the forum. And while I may know how to read and write and I may know a bit of history, you may know Table Tennis, the actual thing that is done on the table better than me or most of us. So thanks for being here.

One aside, what NextLevel is trying to say to you, if you actually get past the personal stuff and try to understand the perspective he is presenting, it could make a lot of things in your life go better. Even in game strategy on the table. See if you can understand his actual point with out internalizing what you feel is the personal content. Trust me, he is not against you either.

Oh, and in the future, since you were recommending that I PM you, and I thought I was advocating for my team, so I did not realize that I really had offended you, it is okay with me if you PM me when you feel I am out of line as well. I think there is some usefulness to things that are public, if you wish to contact me privately for any reason, I will do my best to be there for you.

I like your approach! My favourite bit is NO COMMENT. :)

no need for me to enter the debates/arguments/trolling days later, when the involved said what they wanted to say :)

Hope your shoulder is alright!

sadly after 2.5 hrs last night, shoulder is sore and achy, more than usual ... i may have to be resigned to the fact that my body is not as young as it once was, and i need to take it easier or play less per week. will find a balance somehow.

i love playing and hitting for self-perfection but my form/strokes are all wrong and may also be a factor in the shoulder soreness. played about 1.5 yrs TT now after an absence of a little over 30 yrs. most of the 1 yr playing time was limited to 2-3 hrs 1x a week. no issues with shoulder. in the past 1/2 year, i've progressed to 2 to 3x a wk and only past 2 mos or so, did i notice the soreness.

I haven't had much chance to play tt after playing Monday, which I didn't record as I was just messing around with some friends.

sometimes those are the best sessions - when one is carefree, no expectations, just hitting and flowing and messing around.

Not sure when I will have the time to play again, due to the placement hours (since it's in HK, I'm staying in the hospital for much longer hours than in Aus.) But I will find some time to exercise occasionally.

don't be like me and neglect exercise! when will you be back to uni in Aus?

Doh jeh si-hing!

Yecats, as a person younger than you, I don't understand what the hell you're going on about.

You choose to be insulted by what NL and Carl are saying, even when you're receiving good advice and criticism. It is like being told that you are young and inexperienced, which is a FACT, is somehow insulting and not liberating as it should be. It is merely the explanation for why you feel wronged by some things that more mature people would probably not feel wronged by.

Tell me, at twenty years of age, would Alexander have acted like this if his mentors, older than him in age, criticized him and attempted to unveil the flaws in his thinking?

This all started because I decided to stick up for you, because you get a lot of insults for asking questions and sharing experiences. I know you didn't ask me to, but as a fellow youngster I did. But clearly, from your responses to me defending you, I shouldn't have bothered.

What makes you think that just because someone is older than you, they are always right and you must accept everything they say?

Carls responses have been fine, and I have thanked him for it.

NL has been less than helpful in my opinion, he isn't wrong about everything and has made some good points, but not everything he has said has been "wise" as you say.

I refuse to accept your claim that I am immature. Especially coming from you.

Carl,

Thank you, that helps to clear things up. I don't mean to cause arguments, as you know I just want to discuss TT. But sometimes people do and say things that I take personally, because I do not know that they aren't supposed to be personal.

One thing I have learned is that i'll think twice before sticking up for Archo next time..

:)

Ah ok, shots still being fired left and right and up and down and all around :(

Will just say:

Maybe it's my old man memory, maybe it's my work, but I have the attention span of a gnat ... whatever bad things people say about me, heck, even the good things, i don't remember over time. I give you all props for your good memory and carrying on this sort of chit-chat but not TT chit-chat.

Ultimately, LIFE is short... I will bring up Barry Dattel (RIP). I didn't know him personally, but have heard of him... was big enough name in the 1980's NYC TT scene.

As Shuki pointed out in his types of TTDers thread, I am on here mostly for fun. In the interest of trying to get this thread back on topic...

Or that my videos are an eyesore for table tennis?

nah, send them my vids! I am THE eyesore for TT! As witness below... [EDIT: for those new to this thread, i'm da ugly palooka in dark colors]

Statements (or excuses if you want to say that instead :)

1. My right shoulder is sore/achy.
2. I didn't play since last week Weds, and prior to that I didn't play for 2-3 weeks.
3. I played in an area I really don't like playing in ... the enclosure you see in the video is off-white, what you don't see is the wall behind, where my phone was propped on a ledge, is painted white. I have a tough time picking up the white ball.

I will be the Daily TT Chit Chad thread sacrificial scapegoat/target/bullied... have at me!

[EDIT: further proof i will continue to ask for 9 points from all of you!!]

Its not personally in that he knows me, its personally in that its being singled out and made to look inferior or silly. Its not "personally" in the traditional sense of knowing someone, or having something against someone.

It's times and debates/arguments like these that make me remember my time running the old About.com forum, and also makes me feel the need to go off for a stiff drink... except I had just finished one before starting to catch up on this thread! ;)

I think perhaps I will anyway... I'll raise a glass to the online ghosts of Sjan, RickA, Marco, Larry, PNut, Willy et al...

Lets drop all of this arguing and as OSPH just talk about Table Tennis. I had good intentions, but none of them have come to fruition in the end. Ill think twice before sticking up for someone on here.

Back to TT:

Does anyone know a solution to dried water based glue?

Every time I re-glue my rubbers, I find myself attempting to scrape dried glue off my blade/sponge. And if I don't, I end up with bumps under the rubber. Is there an easy way to avoid this? Or do I need to scrape relentlessly every time?

Thanks :)

I've learned in Life, sometimes it's time to speak up for others, sometimes it's not. Sometimes when you do speak up, you find the person(s) you spoke up for didn't really want/need you to speak up.

An extreme example: in most domestic violence cases, a good samaritan will come between the husband/boyfriend and wife/girlfriend ... however, what the samaritan finds generally is that he wife/girlfriend will side with her husband/boyfriend.

Just my 2 shillings :)

I remain very truly yours in TT,

~osph

Personally, I feel it was a good thing that you brought this up, stood your ground and we sorted most of it out. So, don't be discouraged. And thanks for taking a stand.

But you are right. It is time to get back to TT.

OldSchool, I think we are both busy and our schedules conflict. But we should see if we can get together and I will show you what Edmund taught me that protected my shoulder and stopped me hurting it from as a result of my old TT strokes.

When you are old, there is nothing new under the sun. When you are young, everything is. I am just happy that we have someone to bully Carl and SugaD when they tell me off for not respecting footwork because I have no cartilage in my knees and wrists.
