Daily Table Tennis Chit Chat

says former JPEN, now CPEN
i had a miserable two days playing table tennis bc my forehand topspin was weak out of a sudden, felt like i was forgetting something

then in the middle of hitting i remembered the contact point (the golden triangle rule or whatever ppl call it nowadays) and everything ran like clockwork

i need to drill the contact point of forehand loop into my head

forehand aside i still need to practice backhand more because it is even worse than my forehand on bad days

I mucked around in the social doubles club this morning.
I knew I would not be able to practice/train, but I needed the hours playing with the blade.

So it was not that fruitful but at least I am spending time with the rubber trying to get to know it.

I don't have good control of it yet, and as such, I am not playing as well as I was with the hurricane.
I tried to do my heavy backspin serve but somehow I am finding that my thumb is not griping the rubber firmly when serving as it keeps slipping, which reduces the amount of spin / control I have. I tried drying that spot but it didn't really help. Then when I am home, I try grip it and then it grips really firm and dry.
There is still quite alot of unfamiliarity with it for me.

So I am not too optimistic about the competition, but I will just treat it as an event that I get to play with city players and just enjoy the process. I'll do what I can in the mean time but I am not going to hold myself up for it.

Out for a few days as multiball FH powerloops whole table against block is a bit too hard on the body lol. I have no idea how pros train the way they do, they must have bodies of steel!

I think I need some better ways of winning fast topspin rallies.

One potentially good attempt is to learn the FH early timing loops. I find that FH powerlooping is probably very potent against slower balls, and I think I need to develop a quick timing FH loop against topspin otherwise I'm always forced into mid distance when the ball comes to my FH.

In MD for a wedding. So of course, I gotta ask around to see if anyone is open to playing TT. I considered driving up to my old club in PA two hours away but decided it made more sense to play in MD. Called an old friend and he told me he was travelling out of town, but that MDTTC had a Saturday league for over 2000-rated players. Well, technically, my rating was too low (1993), but I looked at the website and saw there were some possibilities so I planned to head there sometime just before 1pm and see whether I could join.

I get there and the front desk, a coach is there and he tells me that the league starts at 4pm :(. There are lots of kids receiving coaching at the time.

So I pay the club fee, I get on a table to hit and I am joined by a guy whose kid is receiving coaching and I practice looping and serve and serve receive for about 30 mins plus. Around 1:35, there is a break for switching students/classes, and around 1:45, before the new class starts, a penholder around 2200 is told to play me. Definitely a plus for the club, they take keeping guests satisfied seriously lol.

So I play the penholder - we rotate Joola Magic training balls throught the match. The first game goes to deuce but the penholder wins - I realize he is struggling a bit when I serve no spin, but when I serve backspin, he drops the ball comfortably short and heavy, leaving me in disarray and his placement on third ball attacks is extremely deep and precise which is not good for my close to the table game. I managed to win the second game with some good blocks and openers. The third game was also close, I had a lead late in the game, but lost at 9 or deuce, but in the fourth game, he had a big lead, I tried to catchup, but ended up losing the match at 7 in the 4th or so.

On the next table, Chen Yinghua (the legendary Chinese American), who was coaching, complimented my game as the penholder asked whether I was coming for the league. So I decided to go to my hotel and come back later to play.

I came back around 4pm and met the league organizer, who was initially skeptical about whether I should be in the league (lol) - thankfully, my USATT record is visible and verifies my level. I also saw a younger player who I played a lot in the MD/VA area when were both improving players (we are roughly the same level, I just hit 2000 before he did). So I was in the league! Was in a group with 5 players, was the bottom seed, so I was going to get competitive matches all the way through! I miss this kind of experience!

The first match I played was against the #2 seed, a 2200/2300+ Italian two-winged looper. The first game went to deuce but I managed to pull it out. All of a sudden though, whether it was the thrill of winning the first game or the opponent raising level, I just became much more inconsistent, especially when pulled to the wide forehand with a relatively dead ball after playing the backhand - unfortunately no video, but I suspect something in my footwork is not letting me backswing properly. Lost the next 3 games without any real excitement.

Played the #1 seed next, who was easily 2300+ I never checked his rubbers but I am pretty sure he had H3 boosted on forehand - I think I actually led most of the first game and might even have had game points. But I lost that game at deuce. The kid enjoyed being devious and playing lots of touch shots and sideswipes. While there may have been flashes of brilliance here and there, the next two games were largely downhill and I lost 0-3.

Then the #3 seed, a Japanese guy who looked a lot like Takkyu :D (yes, I know Takkyu is French). I managed to win the first game at 9, coming back from 3-9 down or something like that. Then I take a big lead in game 2 and I am up 7-3. Then I proceed to lost 8 straight points. So the match is tied 1-1, I start returning no spin serves sllightly better and I will game 3 11-5. Now I am seeing the possibility of winning this. I go up 4-0 in game 4. But then he comes back to 7-7. Then I go up 9-7. Then between pushing no-spin serves up the table or popping them up for 3rd ball attacks, looping my backhand off the table and struggling with his redirections, I lose game 4 11-9. Fifth game, I go up 3-1, he goes up 4-5, we are tied at 6-6. O I go up 8-6, I go down 8-10, I get to 10-9, and then he serves backspin into my middle and I don't read the amount of backspin or get out of the way of the ball in time and I don't make good contact to the ball goes into the net... I have never felt in control of a match this much and lost it regardless. Entirely sucked! I made some great shots, the lack of video is a bit sad lol.

Well, so me being the math guy,:

won 0 games against the #1 seed
won 1 game against the #2 seed
won 2 games against the #3 seed

then the pattern needs to be completed with my winning 3 games against the #4 seed lol. And the #4 seed happened to the guy whose game I Was already familiar with. His wife had just had a child lol o he had lost practice too. But he had beaten the #2 seed so this was not going to be a cake walk. I lost game 1 at deuce, but I felt I should have won it, so I just focused on returning serve better. He has a big backhand, the main thing was to make sure he wasn't getting easy opportunities to use it and to go hard to the forehand after pulling him to the backhand. I also had quite a few nets and edges go my way, there was even a point where the ball hit the net on match point but stayed on my side, and we both laughed and he said out loud what we were both thinking, that he was surprised it didn't go over given how the day had gone. I did win the next point with a backhand opening loop.

So I went 1-3, got lots of good matches in, got encouraged that my game is broadly on the right track, and got a standing invitation to come back whenever I am in town from the organizer. Good stuff!

The biggest lesson I learned today was that I should not powerloop or even heavy spin the serve on serve return all the time even when I have the opportunity on long or loose serves. There are placement and consistency options to take advantage of as well as the ability to see the ball better if I am patient. Another large less is to build out my rallying skills a bit more, I especially moving to the forehand. and moving to the backhand after playing a forehand that takes me well out of position.

All in all an encouraging day. Back to Dallas on Monday (no more TT opportunities since the festivities are tomorrow), and then maybe I get to play in Dallas if I am lucky though more likely I will have to deal with life and leave TT for later. But will continue to work on my body for sure!

If you read this far, sorry for the long post, and thank you!

Lost 7 games straight to a short pip penholder single rubber. Need to play more games to come back. After a week of vacation, lost a lot of hand feeling and mid finger tender injury.
Lol wait till you play the twiddling inverted/LP penholders...imo it's the most evil style in table tennis.... you'll never be more confused on how the ball is actually spinning....

Imo it is probably the most "cost effective" style in amateur table tennis - if you're not using it as a penholder you're really missing out a lot. Just use LP to disgust the opponent and then use inverted side to finish off the opponent. You still get access to all the evil penholder inverted serves while being largely immune to incoming spin due to LP use during the receive.

I hate that too! But if you get used to it, still worth your time to play them , kinda a fun experience.

Yes.... imo it's such an OP style that it's sometimes funny how ridiculous the balls that are possible lol... if I were to be a penholder I would choose this style 10/10 times. The most OP thing is that penhold can use one side for all balls, so the amount of variation that this setup allows with ease is insane.

I played with some other club players recently and absolutely destroyed them, surprisingly. I was so used to all kinds of disgusting crap from my penhold training partner that their serves and receives posed no threat to me once I figured them out. Basically wherever they served, they were getting attacked lol, with the exception of the FH short serve which I'm not that afraid of either. And they couldn't defend against either my BH chiquita or my BH or FH loops. And once I served it was aces galore lmao to all corners of the table with wildly varying spin. Any "safe returns" were just powerlooped without mercy. Bet they haven't seen the amount of disgusting stuff that's possible with advanced hook serves and pendulum serves. Turns out that my game can be surprisingly oppressive too.

Good training session today. Mainly focused on:

- Consistency when taking the ball off the bounce on both forehand and backhand. Both involve getting and staying low and moving my arm forward
- Movement to get to where the ball is
- Guiding the ball back off of serve, so working on a safety plan if I run into weird/unknown serves
- Utilizing my wrist on backhand. From practice, this is way more intuitive and I think this was the strongest aspect of what I was doing today.

Going to try to get one more league match in before the big tournament at the end of the month. Going to be doing some small amounts of shadow training to stay low in my stance.

So it's been 4.5 months since my injury, I'm finally gonna start get back to things. Characteristically, this is gonna be a long post :p.

Anyhow, I got injured around mid-April, just a couple days before I was supposed to play in a tournament, quite a bummer. I thought it was just a bad ankle sprain, and despite all my doctor friends telling me to at least get an X-ray, I brushed it off, saying that I'd just walk it off. I went to Italy at the end of May, it was still hurting bad particularly when I went up and down stairs. By then the swelling had gone down so I could feel my leg bones, and let me tell ya, it didn't feel right. After I came back in early June, I finally decided to get an X-ray. Well, here it is, and I don't think you need to be a doctor to see what's wrong ;)

20230725_141625.jpg

So there it is, a leg fracture! I was promptly put in a boot, given crutches, and got myself a knee scooter too. Luckily, when I saw an orthopedist a few days later, he told me the fracture is already healing and it's aligned reasonably well, so I can walk on it, just take it easy. That's what I've been doing the past 3 months, and it's now mostly healed. You can still see the fracture line on X-ray, but I'm now able to do normal every day activities. Healing would be faster if I completely immobilize it, especially if I had surgery, but then I'd have to be in a cast for a long time, be unable to walk, and get a second surgery to remove the pins.

My right foot is still pretty weak, so I won't be playing at the club yet, but I'll start off by doing some exercises with my robot in the basement this week. It should be completely healed in the next month or so, then I'll start playing again in the club. I had just glued new sheets of D09C in anticipation of playing the tournament, haven't played with it once yet, so I can't wait!

ESN. You get 30% discount if you buy $350 at TT11, and let us be honest, Gozo, your EJ innerself is popping through so you should just go to town in terms of your shopping. Since you love Tenergy and MX-P so much, my I suggest MX-D or EL-D or both since you can splurge. Plus Rakaz XX which I have not heard much about it but it is faster and spinner than Rakza 7 and Rakza X. Donic BlueStar A1 is also a hot commodity right now. Add Donic Bluestorm Pro to it since the rising Danish star Anders Lind is using it on his backhand. For Joola you have to get the fastest, latest and the most powerful rubber: Joola Dynaryz Inferno. For Stiga, you should gest the latest, top of the line Stiga DNA Platinum XH.

Oh wait, did I tell you if you have bought all those, you hit about $390 already and through TT11 it would only be $273. And now you have MX-D, EL-D, Rakza XX, BlueStar A1, Bluestorm Pro, Dynaryz Inferno and DNA Platinum XH. Seven rubbers to try.

If you buy Dignics 05, you can only buy 3.5 sheets of it, and you cannot play exactly that half sheet....

Come on, Gozo, give yourself an early Christmas gift.... :)

How did you manage to get that fracture? (Weber B ankle fracture)

I'm not an orthopaedic surgeon but I found this patient info sheet online.

All the best with your recovery!

Gozo, there's another choice which would lead to many easy victories ✌️: Join the dark side and buy some LPs to put on the BH lol

Stop paying the inverted tax :(

Gozo, of all people I thought you'd follow the heavy gravity of the 6 advantages.

Just in case you missed it: There is a smoking gun evidence that the Newtonian/Einsteinian gravity is wrong.

Put simply, gravity is actually 40% stronger than we thought. There is no dark matter! This has obviously profound implications on the table tenis, because it now slows the ball down 40% more. So, predictions:

- most pros will start using MX-PXXX by the end of 2023
- sharp increase in outer BASALT and single ply hinoki blade usage
- all TTD members without exception switch to full @Gozo mode
- no dark matter/side, LPs are completely abolished
