The most likely damage you’ll get is your rubber ripping your top layer, happen to me twice before I started to use edge tape…

That's normal things, limba wood especially, most of my blades had that kind of damages.

Personally, I expect damage, so yeah edge tape helps, dents instead of splits. I don't bother sealing my blades, so I am extra careful when removing rubbers, type of glue is important.
But if you really wany a pristine blade then buy 2 or 3 and keep 1 in its box unopened.
I like the battle scars, change in colour etc it tells a story!!

The biggest enemy to blades are edge accidents. So if you want to protect the blade from that, then you can apply a few layers of wipe on polyurethane on the blade edge. Then use the hard plasticky edge tape rather than the thin nylon ones.

This will help spread the impact a little bit so that the layers are less likely to separate on edge accidents.

Joola blade seal, one coat each side to protect from moisture of water based glues.

Edge tape to protect from bangs and scratches on table.

Clear plastic sheets and a square bat case when not in use.
