Just a quick shout out to my daughter Violet-Lily who is now a double National Champion in England having just picked up Gold in the girls U12 and U13 events at the National Championships held over the weekend. Still a long way to go on this journey but it's great to see all her hard work paying off :)

congratulations champion DAD!

behind every successful national champion, there is a hard working DAD

I went to search for the match video.
Not bad and quite a few good rallies (very important for younger players to keep the rallies going).
Only problem I saw, and I need to talk about it here is, not about Violet-Lily, but how in the world can they use a width of 2 surrounds only... that space is smaller than wheelchair courts. (granted the surrounds looks longer than the average ones, and 3 for the width is normally a min - that court looks tiny for even U12/13).
never the less, well done on the win.

What match did you watch? I thought the courts were plenty big enough. Maybe it's just the angle of the video you were watching? I would say the courts were at least 3 table lengths long and I would say 3 table widths wide. They seemed to have plenty of room to me and weren't running into barriers etc.

Here's a short clip from the U12's final:

That’s an excellent result, the spoils of hard work and dedication. Well done to Violet- Lily and yourself for supporting her. Hopefully this will be the start of a great career!!

I think I may have played your daughter about 15 months or so ago, at Warren Springs club tournament?

Congratulations to Violet-Lily and yourself!

I've visited your club a couple of times, and had the privilege to have a knock with Violet-Lily. She is so talented and motivated! What you and Elroy got going at your club is amazing.

That's a different tournament. This is a recording of the final from the Butterfly National Schools Individual Championships from back in April, not the National Championships that were held last weekend. It's actually the same venue, but the Schools event has a lot more participants which equates to more tables in the hall which means smaller court sizes.

Yes that's right, Violet and a couples of others from our club played in the Warren Springs tournament (I used to play for Warren Springs a few years ago in local league, hence the connection)

the facebook video you posted, still only shows to surrounds width.
which is a bit small even for juniors and considering the big hall (free space, for a final)

Do U15/U19 also play within such space in England?

correction, i see it is more than 2, maybe 2.2 to 2.4 surrounds, with the other table sharing half and the court having some half too

The court sizes for the nationals would have met the standards for such an event. In practice, the barriers do get moved around during and after matches. But, the umpires would correct infractions, especially for the 'finals' matches.

so, same court size here, for older players and seniors too?

I wasn't at this event, so not sure. But the court size would generally be the same.
Yes, they could be bigger sometimes. Every tournament, some players do hit the barriers. But the really huge arenas are not available at reasonable cost. The players generally don't have an issue with the court size as most of us don't practise in anything larger.

The only players that sometimes have a moan, are the ones that like to play a 'fishing' style away from the table!!!

Right, I thought it was Violet I played. Even then she was showing a very good standard of play for her age. I got a win against her, but it could be a different story now!! Her improvement is very noticeable.
Violet showed a lot of emotion that day, which showed her disappointment at not winning some of her matches in the group we played in. For me this translates into a big positive, some young players are in pieces after a loss, I've heard that this can be the sign of future champions, they care that much and just don't like losing!!

I would hit the surrounds on the FH width side should I do a cross over FH.
3 surrounds wide is the norm with up to 5 wide for finals.

It is normally 14m x 7m
3 surrounds wide would still be shorter than 7m, ie Butterfly surrounds are 2.2m, x 3 is only 6.6m
it is clearly a 2.2 to maybe 2.5 surrounds, (2.5 x 2.2m = 5.5m or 78% of the requirement set by ITTF)

any ways, it doesn't take away the performance of Violet-Lily of this thread.
I was just surprised seeing the width of the court size in my first video, and second video (being slightly better) isn't according to spec too.
finals with no other games going - some times tight spaces, it is common sense that match referee would make the courts bigger. But I see you guys have other challenges in England, and the court size is minute compared to that.

Small size court limit development of certain abilities and styles and should be discouraged. (we also have space problem in Taiwan in certain venues.... but Taiwan is small and land availability is a problem)

I'm not sure if the TTE regs match that of ITTF 100%.
Sure for a National Championship final, for any age group, you would think that the court size should be to ITTF standards for the highest level of competition.
We have different grade tournaments, 1* , 2*, 3* Etc and the court size per table is larger for the higher graded tournament.

14m x 7m in Germany you only get in Bundesliga. It gets smaller the lower you go, but the minimum here should be 10m x 5m.
yep, same in many countries
seldom see smaller than 5m wide

that 2 surround in the butterfly event, had 4.4m wide
that was tiny and I haven't really seen that for a final before.

but again - finals, just make it wider and longer
only takes 1 or 2 mins and its better for player and all

but now, you have so many people sitting so near the table, the players won't be playing wide shots.
I don't know... learning something new every day.

Yeah, they usually put away tables and barriers once semi-finals/finals are happening here unless you still have a lot of other matches going on.
