Oil based or water based? Pong professor on YouTube tested with both
I use the water based one. Doesn't soak into the wood and doesn't change the wood properties as much.

All you need is a very thin layer on the blade face that gets in the way between a glued rubber and the wood so that the fibers don't get pulled up when removing rubbers.

Since the wood on most blades have grains running vertically, you can limit the likelihood of splintering by pulling rubber perpendicular to the grain (e.g., left to right).

I’ve got a national player w968 on the way. Which blade sealant is the best? I’ve got access to dhs blade protection coating, joola water based varnish, donic lacquer formula, and blade lacquer revolution no 3, which one would you recommend to use?
how much did it cost you? And have you tested it before buying?

How comes? Do you have experience with blades changing rubbers etc?
lacquering change the feel, also it makes the rubber falls off a lot easier. There's no point in lacquering. Peeling the rubber shouldn't splinter the wood unless you are using weird glues. Stick with No R3volutino, no15, or finezip and you are good to go. Most splinter comes from player accidentally hit the blade on the table. If that's the case, fix it with wood filler then sand it smooth.

Thanks, yeah I use dhs no 15 for gluing on my boosted hurrucane rubbers, easy glue to peel off when reboosting. Peel left to right not up down so splintering less likely. Appreciate the advice!

Just FYI I have worked with collectors close with the CNT that knows for a fact prott does sell at least some fakes.
Thanks good to know, what are the give aways the w968 would be fake? Prott seems to be very genuine I haven’t seen anything bad about them online and I’ve ordered from them a few times already.

I have one. Its unsealed, I only use DHS 15 and peel rubber sideways and its starting to splinter after 3 rubber changes. Everyone freaks out if u seal it, but I noticed most who do that don't even play with one of these blades lol
I guess it all boils down to how easy it is for u to buy a new one later. If it's not easy, seal it

Every well used W968 I've seen that's unsealed has splinters. I would recommend sealing it unless you change rubbers very often (before it hardens) or change blades often.

Plebs. Don't seal. It splinter because when you push you hit the blade on the table. Just sand it smooth when you change rubber and you are good to go. If the splinter is unavoidable, peel that wood off and fix it with wood filler
