ML had more versatility than this, this is just king long table tennis and I do not believe it Is sustainable for for more than brief critical periods. I think the contenders (Shidong, Harimoto, LYJ) can take advantage of his lesser days. ML.could still get by with 40% days.
Well you don´t know if he is gonna adapt aswell. ML also changed his playstyle over the years. Why would he change now when he doesn´t need to yet? He might have a bad year and then it will depend on if he adjusts and can come up with a more suited playstyle for his age

WCQ's big head hiding the ball "name calling" actually started in china by fans of other players.
there is no doubt wcq gets advantages from his hidden serves.

people have been saying that he can be no 1, he could become a grand slam, but his hidden serves will always be there with his name.

The other greats before him, didn't need to rely on tricks to get some advantages.
Many times when WCQ is in trouble, he would start using his hidden serves.

There is no doubt during open play, he is a very strong player. So to me... why don't he just win during open play and why needing to get those extra advantages by using tricks.
Waldner, LGL, WLQ, ML, even WH laughing at this opinion tbh

Ryu footwork overrated because he beat top three Chinese.
Most of the top guys on the Chinese national team have had amazing footwork for days.
He beat the top 3 Chinese mostly because of his insane footwork. Don’t confuse the cause and effect

People, Me included, said the same about FZD's lack of versatility and trying to outrally everyone's style but look how his career panned out. In the best way.

WCQ doesn't just outpower everyone, I don't really think he's even as powerful as Ma Long, FZD or Hugo, He's also scrawny. I think it's the combination of his set-up+ serve/receive+ angles/placement+ decisiveness in the first couple of exchanges with his forehand that makes him stand out. None of these things look unsustainable. A style that's high on only power is what could actually be unsustainable. Everyone can lose form, and apart from his performance in the second half of last year, he's never had prolonged poor performances since he broke out internationally in 2020, so using last year as a crux may not be the best way to view his stability tbh.

Wang Liqin and Ma Lin also had subpar backhands. Wang Hao was the one with the good backhand . I'm not confusing cause and effect.

Interesting that WCQ usually only plays like this against righties btw, against lefties it's usually a BH Vs BH slugfest with the occasional all out forehand rallies. I think he's developed a style that just completely overwhelms right-handers when he's playing well.

Ma Long wasn't winning on athleticism and people forget that Ma Long won his first WTTC at the advanced age of 27.

FZD retiring at 27 isn't quite the argument for this that you might think it is, especially if you accept the possibility that the rumors that WCQ is overaged might be true, But even if not, that will give WCQ four years to achieve what he needs to. Do remember that Ma Long required surgery to fix his knee even with his playing style and WCQ already has a permanent knee support.

This does not look to me like a consistency style which FZD was. There is something very high risk about it. And winning points on early reads is high risk because it all it takes for your timing or fitness to be off for a day for things to not go the way you think they will. FZD was more about outlasting his opponents.

This is true. We will see how it goes. I am just old enough to know what it feels like to have a body that doesn't work like it used to, Younger people who don't have that experience might think WCQ can perform miracles more easily than I can, lol.

(WCQ said he is in the later half of his professional career)

(Indeed, FZD, who is one year older than him, has semi-retired)

(That's about right. Although Headhead has a low EQ, he usually tells the truth in interviews. Judging from the fact that he was mindful enough to set 980511 as his screen lock password, he is fully aware how old he is. He will be 30 already at Los Angeles, so he's definitely in the later half of his career)

(🦁: I think compared to the last time, first of all, I have experienced a lot more, whether it is the experience in life, the baptism in competitions, including the ups and downs of life, including the update of techniques. I think the changes are still very big. When facing the competitions, my current thoughts are different from those at that time. Maybe now I will be more mature, more reasonable, and more positive, compared to last year's Chongqing. I hope to maintain such a good competitive and mental state.)

("I think the National Games are the most important competition for our local team. It is also very important for us. It is a grand and the largest sporting event in the country. So I really hope to achieve good results for Beijing. There may not be many preliminaries, maybe only the team event. I also hope to help the Beijing team successfully obtain the qualification and quota.")

("I think I should thank everyone, including my friends, relatives, family members, and coaches. Everyone would care about me after the Olympics. And I should thank myself because only I can save myself. At that moment, in the current situation, it was not easy to come out of it. Looking back now, it was really difficult. But now that I have come out of it, I believe that I can face anything in the future with a positive attitude. Maybe my current understanding of my career, my understanding of the later half is that no matter what kind of competition I face, I can accept good results and poor results. But in the process of the results not happening, I will go all out and try not to leave any regrets for myself.")

("I think it exceeded my own and everyone's expectations. I really enjoyed myself on the court. I think my mentality was very good when facing an opponent like Lin Shidong because he is also the latest world number one. I didn't have too many burdens when playing against him. I challenged him while being completely relaxed. The overall technical and tactical execution was still very resolute and decisive.")

("During the course of the competition, I learned some things. This week was actually very difficult and painful. I felt very frustrated. But I was fighting for my country after all, and I tried my best to face every match. I think this is also a responsibility for my career as an athlete, including my identity as a member of the Chinese national table tennis team. I hope that after I have achieved this, my family will see this title, including the gesture, and I hope it will bring good luck to my family.")

("I think the pace of preparation is the same as in previous competitions. I will keep a calm mind after the competition because the final will definitely be with my teammate. I think I have defended my half of the draw. I think I have achieved a goal I set for myself in this competition, so when it comes to the final, I will just enjoy the match.")

("First of all, I think we have been opponents since childhood and are very familiar with each other. Maybe every time we face each other, our mentality is always good. No one has any burden. So I think only with such a mentality can we play well. I think today I am also facing such a semi-final with a fighting mentality. I think his recent form and consistency are also very good, so I was also fully prepared for the difficulties of today's match.")

Outlasting opponents also highly depends on form and fitness, unless FZD was on Creatinine or gear. But I get your point though. We'd see how things go. WCQ may not end up being a GrandSlam Champion but he should have a lot in store when he draws the curtain on his career. Now that I think of it, Fan's retirement may have been fully up to him, or a mutual agreement with the CNT heads. We can't be too sure. He's always been vocal about having a life outside table tennis, retiring early and with Ma Long. What better time to do it if not after the Olympics?. If Fan didn't win the Olympics, he may still be playing today.

WCQ would be 27 this year
Who knows what the future holds.
Which is why I gave him four years. If you believe either the FZD or ML trajectory that corresponds to his age, he has 4 years and has already lost the Olympics in this cycle with only XD medals. He needs to win the WTTC this year for sure but he is definitely the favorite.

FWIW, WCQ's current achievements show that LGL was right about him being "眼高手低/high expectations but low skills" in his debrief at the end of Day 2 of the selection trial for WTTC 2017.

Can't find the highlight reel where he said it.

Fan was already showing signs of exhaustion last year. While I know it was partly interests and he could have played on, the demands of remaining unbeatable definitely played a part. How you remain unbeatable points towards sustainability with age. And the truth is that because o Ma Long playing in the cell ball era and being coached by traditional penholders, he developed and learned an arsenal of things that will not have the same value in most of these guys. But the future will answer, I admit this is conjecture. Maybe WCQ will break the lefty curse...

still thinking back to one of the forehands wang chuqin hit vs alexis, he played a weak one then got ball back same spot and it was sent past Alexis at absolutely blistering pace. he represents a different level of danger
He is doing things to get in his forehand that are beyond 90% of pros. It is really amazing.
