We head next door from Ljubljana, Slovenia to Zagreb, Croatia. The Harimoto siblings headline Men's and Women's singles. The two will also try again for Mixed Doubles. As expected, many of the same players in Slovenia will be in Croatia.

Duda back in after having to sit out Ljubljana in singles. The way PDR is implemented i don't really like about Contender series. Wildcards already exist as arbitrary spots to invite players, why do hosts get to freely pick the top 20 entrants too.

Don't think live audience is key for WTT survival, especially at smaller tour stops, although it would be nice to have of course. Recent financial report shows most of the revenue coming from commercial rights with a significant increase from 2023. WTT also had its first profitable year while still expanding. I'm no expert though and it's quite complex with minority shareholders involved that raise some questions. ITTF's statement:

With the publication of the ITTF Group’s consolidated financial statements, we are proud to announce a major milestone: in 2024, WTT recorded its first-ever profit, contributing towards the ITTF Group consolidated profit of USD 1.5 million.

Most startups take several years to reach profitability as they build their operations and establish their market presence. That WTT has achieved this in under five years –and within the 2021-2024 quadrennial forecast approved by the ITTF Annual General Meeting– is a clear signal of the model’s viability.

For as long as Sha-Tou play and that China and Japan back WTT (and here). Therefore, beware of biting the hand that feeds you.

The European market has been stagnant for years per ESN and Stiga.

In these smaller draws it is becoming somewhat inevitable without separation by association.

WTT Contender Zagreb-2025 - is the eighth table tennis tournament of the 2025 series WTT Contender Series (and the fifth level tournament WTT Contenders), held in the Arena Zagreb hall, address: Ulica Vice Vukova 8, 10000 Zagreb, Croatia. WTT Contender Zagreb-2025 is held Croatian Table Tennis Association under patronage of World Table Tennis (WTT) from June 24 to June 29, 2025.

The prize money for medalists in the tournament was $100,000.

Tournament qualification

Top 20 Participation Restrictions
Singles events

• A maximum of three (3) players will be permitted to participate if players are inside the Top 20 of the ITTF TTWR, at the time of the entry deadline.

National Entry Restriction (NER)
Singles events

• Each Member Association shall be allowed a maximum of four (4) players per event excluding the WTT nomination. The restriction is applied across both the Main Draw and Qualifying competition, to provide for a maximum total of four (4) players in any combination (i.e., 2 Qualifying / 2 Main Draw or 1 Qualifying / 3 Main Draw).

Doubles events

• Each Member Association shall be allowed a maximum of eight (8) players per event with a maximum three (3) full pairs consisting of players from the same Member Association (i.e., 3 CZE/CZE, 1 CZE/SWE, 1 CZE/GER).

Mixed Doubles events

• Each Member Association shall be allowed a maximum of four (4) players per event in any pairing combination.

The Host is permitted to use its wildcards to nominate additional players from any Member Association and/or pairs in any combination outside of the NER limit.

Wildcards

• The host is entitled to the following Wildcards: three (3) players for the Singles Main Draw and two (2) pairs for the Doubles and Mixed Doubles Main Draw.
• The host is entitled to the following Wildcards: twelve (12) players for the Singles Qualifying Draw and two (2) pairs for the Doubles
• Any unused Wildcards/Nominations will be returned to the direct entries.
