I can't play table tennis when the opponent is humiliating himself and talks to himself just to get some magical powers. Are they mentally ill?

I want to find the answer to why table tennis is the only sport where people love to talk to themselves when they make mistakes or even after scoring a point. I don't know of any other sport that people do this in. Not even people in tennis on the ground do it. People insult themselves and humiliate themselves when not playing well in table tennis. When I was new in a table tennis club, I thought they were talking to me, but then I found it ridiculous that they talk to themselves. I told myself, "I will never talk to myself at all; these people are strange," and after playing for months, I did develop some of this talking to myself, and I regret it.

I've already seen in WTT videos too that all sorts of players talk to themselves too.

I mean, isn't it funny that, let's say, somebody's name is "Ted," and he makes a mistake and tells himself loudly, "Ted, how many times have I told you not to do this?" and "I will cut this finger—each time the ball hits it." There is even a guy I've seen; he continuously says, "You're the best, very good, nice," even when he makes mistakes! Or he is just used to saying this. I used to laugh at him for this kind of behavior, but now that I play with him and he is still like that, I tell him inside myself, "Bro, shut your mouth," because if I am indifferent about this, then I'll become like him.

I wish there was a rule that people could just stop talking and behaving like clowns. Them behaving like that makes me uncomfortable, and it feels like I have to leave and not play with them anymore; it reduces my seriousness to play.

What is the reason that people are being like this? Since China has the most top-level players, is it them who promoted this kind of behavior worldwide?

The coach in the club tells himself that he should get back to his village when he can't play nicely, and it insinuates that people that live in that village are low level. It feels like these people in real life can't speak up, and they come to the club to let it go. There is a very fat dude; he tells himself, "Slave! Do it correctly."

is this an american thing?

But in my locale: we do express ourselves like:
1. Cho-lei ( pretty standard exclaimation, used globally )
2. Hao-chiu ( Good ball )
3. Piau-Liang ( Fantastix )
4. Ta Ma Te ( F Ur Mutha )
5. Niamah ( Colloquil - Ur Muther, more polite version, self-censorship without the F word )

What? They don't do this in other sports where you live? What rock is that?

I've seen tennis players, footballers, badminton, athletics, even in the bloody gym, everyone does this everywhere.
+1

I would suggest that rather than focusing on your opponents behavior, be engrossed in your tactics and remembering your plan. If you are getting too much bothered by your opponents behavior or chit chat then you are losing focus on your next steps or your tactics. Keep breathing deeply and keep your focus on the next point. Take mental notes on the mistakes and workarounds around those. Keep revising it and keep formulating your plan. Any plan to approach a match is fluid thing, it keeps transforming as your opponent adjusts to your tactics. So keep your focus only on your adjustments and how you envision your next point.

OP doesn't know what he's talking about or maybe he only plays table tennis and doesn't have exposure to other sports? lol.

Literally in every sport, athletes will do this at one point or another, especially if they are ultra competitive and not performing how they would expect.

Not even people in tennis on the ground do it.
You must be very young and have never seen McEnroe play tennis 😁
Many tennis players are constantly mumbling and often shout out .
But of course the venues for table tennis are more intimate and of course indoors

Insulting yourself for making mistakes is a big mistake. It gets you into a bad place very quickly. It's based on perfectionism and an absolute / fixed mindset.

The difference between you and them, is that they externalise their frustrations with themselves as the target, whereas you internalise your frustrations with the other players as the target. No mentally 'healthy' human being can be so annoyed by other players' self-talk that they "can't play table tennis" because of it. There has to be something else going on, with the self-talk being the straw on the camel's back. I suspect that you have similar issues, but they just present differently during play. If this is the case, then this can be an opportunity to improve your mindset and grow as a person, which really is the whole point of playing a competitive sport anyway.

Yeah I can't in my right mind commit to doing that. Not only does it have zero meaning to me, it's also something I only see annoying people do
But I'll surely get into some "Ja! Lekker!" or "bam!"
