I think both Hina and Satsuki are the best WD players in Japan with Hina perhaps being a bit more stable. This pairing will also be useful in T-League as Joo Cheonhui joined Hina's team this season.
Hayata and Odo might be best WD players in Japan individually, but imo the best Japanese WD pairing is Hashimoto/Sato currently. Unfortunately, Hashimoto/Sato are unlikely to be selected for the next Olympics, but I hope that I am wrong. At least they should have a chance to defend their title at the WTT Finals in Hong Kong since the NER does not apply at that tournament.

EDIT: Unfortunately, there will be no WD at the WTT Finals in Hong Kong. Only Mixed Doubles.

In a David vs. Goliath matchup, Kyoto Kaguya Rise beats powerhouse Abyell 3-1. The "shocker" of the night was Mikuu Izumo exploiting Miu Hirano's relative weakness on the wings to win 3-1. Mikuu herself is smaller in size than the average player, but she holds the table well and has that Mima Ito smashing style that gives many players trouble. A great win for the Kyoto ace player.

Another interesting interview with Hashimoto by "Table Tennis Japan." Members outside of Japan most likely need to a VPN to watch this.

I am not a native Japanese speaker, but below are some interesting points. Note that the auto-generated translation can be somewhat inaccurate:
  • Misaki Morizono has been Hashimoto's coach since April 2025
  • It seems that Hashimoto used to apply too much brute force in her attacking play and she has been working on using her body more efficiently [I find this hard to believe, but it's good news if it's true because it would mean that there is room for improvement]
  • Hashimoto gets quite nervous before matches. One way Morizono tries to help Hashimoto relax is by talking about unrelated topics such as the weather
  • Hashimoto likes drinks with tapioca
  • There is an interesting anecdote about Tomokazu Harimoto

Japan vs China 0-3

Honoka Hashimoto vs WMY 1-3 (10,-3,-6,-3)
Miwa Harimoto vs SYS 0-3 (-9,-5,-7)
Hina Hayata vs KM 1-3 (8,-10,-6,-9)
I felt like Japan could've had a better chance to put Honoka at the 3 spot because one of KM/CXT/WYD are much more unstable against her than the top 2 Chinese (would've been super interesting to see KM vs Honoka).

I agree with you. Hashimoto hasn't won against SYS and WMY so far plus she has a positive H2H against KM (2-0), CXT (2-0), and WYD (3-1). However, it would not have made a difference in terms of end result.

EDIT: At least the coach gave Hashimoto a chance to play in the SF and the F and I hope he will continue to do so.

Well let's hope she gets her Kuai Man moment. The CNT will get Kuai ready. She used to struggle against Ojio Haruna and fixed it so unlike most, I suspect Kuai will be fine.

It might not have made a difference but I would personally fancy Hayata against WMY. Sometimes you never know which Hayata you get lol

Probably will be fine but will be much more of who knows what could happen compared to WMY and SYS

I wonder if they should have put Miwa as 1st seeding then Hashimoto at 2nd seeding. I felt like Miwa would have had a better chance against WMY than SYS.

How does the toss work on the ABC vs XYZ? Do the teams submit the team members before hand on who 1st, 2nd and 3rd seeding then the toss happens or do they decide the seeding 1, 2, and 3 after the toss?

Mostly because fans project positive on Hashimoto when her opponent hasn't played her, in reality, the CNT is bringing the threat bsck into focus and as Wang Yidi showed their results are alread improving. Hashimoto is a much stronger defender than Suh Hyo Won in 2025 but as a first step, I am just establishing that Kuai is competent vs defense. The rest we can wait for the match.
