Samara beats Odo.

With Miwa in floundering form, Hashimoto already being figured out, and the no.3 spot still wide open for anyone to take, will Japan be ok in LA2028?

My goat Patrick has been eliminated from his last WTT event of the year. Truly a sad day for Backhand Bomba believers 😔
Hugo is still in the event. Backhand bombas are still in play.

Hmm they struggled against North Korea, the SK trio of SYB/KNY/JCH have been getting good wins over JNT and running deeper into tournaments in general. Zeng Jian and Samara are now scalping Ito + Odo. Germany also looks well positioned to give a good challenge. I just think JNT should worry about keeping their No.2 spot than challenging China at this point.

Right now, my top 3 would be Miwa, Hashimoto, and Hina. Miwa mostly needs rest. Honoka is still the most stable in performance though cracks are starting to show. Hina had a good SC London making the finals losing to Miwa 11-9 in the 7th. She got a bad draw in Montpellier with a 1st round exit to eventual champion WYD. Getting past Joo in Frankfurt is a huge achievement as Joo is playing exceptionally well (beating Honoka) and arguably the most technically sound in the bottom half of the draw.

I think Miwa is perfectly safe for LA2028. Anything can happen with the other 2 spots.

Both Harimoto siblings need to take breaks imo. Never understood why they played the Contenders or even Star Contenders tbh. At least don’t go to EVERY single one lol

You can't determine how the opponent plays. That said for PRK, it is hard to prep for a team when you have no info and even then they may have not felt extreme urgency as most of the pressure was on Odo. There is no teams event for LA so unsure how selection will work. For singles, it is still Harimoto-Hayata until further notice and it may be that for doubles as well. But there is a lot of time.

The most important thing is for Miwa to grow. If she does, then they have a #1 that doesn't lose to anyone other than maybe China, that is enough for everything else to fall into place. But without that, you can't keep down the Joos and Shins of the world.

When any country will be able to challenge China in womens events, it will snow in Hell. It happened only twice in WTTTC since 1975... last one being Singapore in 2010. That happened way more frequently for the men's team, because of Sweden mostly, Hungary or Japan. The last time a womens JNT has won the WTTTC, it was in 1971. Since 1971, the womens CNT is always qualified for the final. The women's JNT does not have that consistency.

to be fair they've made the final for every team event they've participated in since London Olympics 2012. The only exceptions off the top of my head are the Asian Champs 2023 where they drew China in semifinals and also World Team Cup 2023. WTC 2023 is particularly significant since they sent their best players at the time and that's also the event that will be played at LA2028.

Tieba users already pointed out at the end of ATTTC 2025 that there is no telling the JPN men will carry the JPN women in XT one day.

Germany beat them in SF at Rio 2016, where Ito 2-3 Solja and 9:3 in G5.

For XTWC 2023, Korean media could not thank Hayata enough.

Crazy how dima can play this well despite coughing every 5 seconds lol
It is the Zyre, he has the Zyre. Never seen Dima hit the ball that fastest consistently... Harimoto felt like a spectator... once he was defeated on the backhand diagonal, no hiding place...
