Before I made the all-wood violin blade I posted earlier, I was actually experimenting with Inner-Carbon. This is one of an inner carbon blade, with carbon layers are bonded by epoxy while other layers hide glue.
The Experiment:
I tried a different wood combo than the usual Limba/Ash:
Outer: Sugar Maple (Tangential cut). I sanded this super thin (0.2mm) after the press to try and keep the wood feel.
Force Layer: 1.0mm Horizontal Hinoki.
Core: 2.6mm Ayous + Blue ALC.
The Result (Serendipity & Mistakes):
It feels fast with a turbo. Vibrates at around 1330hz
The sound was a total surprise. It is LOUD. It makes a huge "POK" sound, almost like a drum. I am guessing the thin maple act as a drum skin while the soft horizontal thick hinoki is acting like the drum body resonating the sound. It’s actually really satisfying to hit with.
I guess the feeling of fastness has something to do with the huge loud "pok" sound.
Play-wise, it has a weirdly high arc. I thought the Hard Maple would make it flat, but I guess because I sanded it down to 0.2mm, it flexes more than I expected.
(I laser cut a Tomoe representing Taiko, a japanese drum in the back after I found out it plays this loud)
The not so great (Weight):
The performance is there, but I messed up the lamination.
I didn't measure the epoxy ratio strictly enough, and the blade came out at 103.3g.
A member here (@SlowPower) gave me some great advice recently about measuring the epoxy by weight rather than volume, so I’m hoping my next attempt (maybe using Basalt fiber?) will land in the 90-95g range.
Right now it's at 196g with kts platz on forehand and ak47 red on backhand. It forces me to play with all my body. It Plays great, but I think it could be lighter?
Does anyone know of ultra-lightweight offensive rubbers that's on the cheap/ultra cheap side that you recommend?
