The LGY in him did show up in late G1 and mid-G3 against that Calderano. Refer to the LGY vs Harimoto versus LGY vs ML at World Cup 2024.

Hugo looked very off. Everything went long on his forehand.
Hugo therefore tends to ‘hang’ to one side rather than moving forward as he should, but he’s been doing this his whole life, so there must have been something else at play, and I’m fairly certain it was down to the qualities of his opponent.

It’s easy to be young and hungry and play carefree, don’t have to worry about carrying your country’s hope on your lone shoulders and just go all out to win.
It’s 100 times harder to be Hugo in this match.

Just saying

(not taking away from anyone’s brilliant performance in such situation)

Well for most people it is not. Hugo wasnt 100 % himself yes but coton also didnt let him to develop/unfold his game. Harimoto also played carefree as a youngster and he still remains withought a significant breakthrough (based on performance though, he should be on the final of the olympics and not truls)

Coton showed signs of character in the juniors competition also, in my eyes it is really rare.

I can't disagree more. There is a significant difference between a top 5 player and a top 25 player usually. Losing 0-3 (the way Hugo did) makes no sense. He should have won at least a game.

There’s no such thing as “should have”. This is exactly why Teams event is so different than Singles events. If this were a singles tourney Hugo would not have lost like this.

There’s reason Brazil coach didn’t even call a timeout during that match. Teams tournament like this players need a lot more support than Brazil can give Hugo, so many things and support on so many fronts (including but not limited to just higher ranked teammates and world class coaches..)

France is in so much better shape in that regards than Brazil and players thrive in a fostering environment

Didn’t intend to argue so much from my original post but I think if this were a Chinese top player (not Hugo), you guys who said these “should haves” would have a valid point, but Hugo didn’t have the same kinds of support Chinese players have. It’s different but i will stop. Let’s enjoy the game

There is a such a thing as should have and it is based on expectation. 5 should beat 25 or whatever. Coton has beaten a lot of good players and even pushed Lin Yun Ju 5 games. Beating Hugo was not outside his range. I get your defense of Hugo and accept it on a basic level, but the bottom line is that he was beaten at the table. My excuse for him is that this was the best player he had played in the event. Prior to this, the best player he had beaten was either Isaac Quek, Tom Jarvis, Csabas Andras or Adam Szudi. He was comfortable against those players. This is the first time he has played someone he had a legit chance of losing to.

The only match today that wasn't 3-0 was Romania-France women (which was 3-1)

France men have won all their knockout matches 3-0

For both men and women, 3 of the final 4 teams are the same as at the Olympics. For the men, Taiwan replaces Sweden. For the women, Romania replaces South Korea.
