In an exclusive interview, Zhang Yining admits she was "tired of winning" and retirement was necessary for the natural transition between old and new generations.

https://www.shobserver.com/staticsg/res/html/web/newsDetail.html?id=1112318&sid=11
("I had basically won all the titles I could have won by then. Continuing to compete would only have meant constantly breaking my gold medal tally, but for me personally, there would have been no real growth." She spoke calmly, pausing for a moment before adding, "There's another, more important reason: table tennis needs a generational shift. If I occupy a spot in the competition for too long, younger players will have fewer opportunities to shine. If I take a singles spot, I'll likely be prioritized for the team and doubles lineups as well, which will inadvertently crowd out the growth path for the new generation." She said that if she hadn't retired, the development cycle for the next generation of players would have been delayed by at least one to two years.)

Well, a big reason they could play into their 40's is because there are no newcomers. One could argue Europe is in this poignant state more or less because these players "broke the curve" and encroached on the era of the next generation or two, when already a decade past their prime. To put it bluntly, they're getting in the way.

WH eats into ML's era just as ML eats into FZD's era. Will FZD eat into WCQ's era? (Looking up WCQ's DOB...) Never mind.

2024/4/23
The problem with that kind of longevity is that they (with more experience) compete against players from a later generation (still developing), which is what FZD meant when he said ML was the greatest of this era but that he and ML were not from the same era and that he had just hit the road.

Man, Moregard and Matsushima (not surprising for the latter) have such shitty win rates...

Win rates against top 40
WCQ 85.6%
F. Lebrun 72.7%
LSD 71.9%
LJK 68.3%
LYJ 65.9%
Calderano 63.5%
Harimoto 62.4%
Moregard 56.5%
Matsushima 50%

A Tieba user has just posted a table comparing 2025, the 1st year of the LA28 cycle, to 2019 and that the title rates of WCQ and LSD are comparable to those of FZD and ML. The current issue with the CNT has more to do with the ones in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th places.

(The title rates of Double-Head in the LA Olympic cycle are similar to those of the main players in 2019)

If the translation is right why do the mens team don’t require trials and is selected by the coach for the last spot whereas the womens team have to go through trials to decide the last spot. I understand that the womens team is more competitive compared to the mens team but selection of the team should not be different between genders.

What did WRB, HYZ and KM, CY do to be in the team?

Because the competition is unequal on the men's and women's sides. Hence, forcing gender equality on the selection is unwise and in fact harmful to equality as it ignores the overall situation specific to either gender. Rather than gender equality, it's far more desirable to observe equality while respecting the differences/circumstances for either gender. Otherwise, why are there 2 categories as men and women in sports? Just ignore the physiological differences and let them compete together.

Men's side: World, namely JPN, FRA, SWE, KOR, TPE, GER, IRI, ROU
Women's side: Largely JPN and KOR, plus select players from PRK, GER, EGY and maybe ROU

This goes back to Sun Yat-sen's argument that "individuals shouldn't be too free".

https://weibo.com/ttarticle/p/show?id=2309405305361707434168

Continuing from the previous post...

(At 4 AM on May 10, 2026, Wang Hao sent a message to team doctor Liu Cunzhi, “Come find me after you wake up and give me a massage.”

That afternoon at 4 PM, the men's team final of the London World Table Tennis Championships was about to begin. The night before, the Chinese men's table tennis team's semi-final against France went on until after 10 PM. They didn't get back to the hotel until 11:30 PM. Wang Hao, who had been following the same routine for nearly ten days—showing videos to the four right-handed players and their coach for preparation, then showing videos to left-handed player Wang Chuqin for match preparation—decided to break this pattern. He let the whole team rest and get treatment, "eat well and sleep well," and postpone the match preparation until the next morning.

However, he himself couldn't sleep, feeling both excited and agitated. Compared to previous Chinese team lineups, this five-person team wasn't the strongest overall, but through mutual support, they finally reached the final.

Against the Japanese team, Wang Hao brainstormed lineups, trying to figure out how to communicate effectively to uncover the players' true confidence in playing certain positions. He thought about this until early morning when the team doctor, Liu, massaged his head. He seemed to doze off for an hour, or perhaps only slept for a few minutes, before regaining his energy and starting to prepare with the team.

In the finals, Wang Chuqin playing the number one position was a foregone conclusion. As for the second and third singles pairings, Wang Hao needed to understand the players' intentions. Before the four right-handed players came to Wang Hao's room to watch videos, Wang Hao asked Liu Zhiqiang to ask Liang Jingkun, "Whose videos do you want to watch?" The feedback was that Liang Jingkun wanted to watch videos of Tomokazu Harimoto and Hayato Togami. Upon hearing this, Wang Hao knew that Liang Jingkun was wavering between playing the second and third singles pairings, so he called Liang Jingkun to his room and asked him, "Is it better to play against Harimoto or Togami?" Liang Jingkun said they were about the same. Wang Hao then asked, "Do you think Lin Shidong has an advantage against Harimoto or against Togami?" Liang Jingkun answered confidently, "Lin Shidong and Togami are easier to play against." Wang Hao continued, "Do you have a psychological advantage against Harimoto, or does Lin Shidong have a psychological advantage against Harimoto?" This time, Liang Jingkun didn't hesitate: "It's definitely me." Wang Hao nodded and said, "Then you go play against Zhang Ben, annoy him." Liang Jingkun laughed upon hearing this.

Wang Hao then asked Lin Shidong the same question. Lin Shidong's answer was, "Brother Liang definitely has a psychological advantage against Zhang Ben." Wang Hao nodded and said to him, "Then you should prepare well for your match against Zhang Ben." Through conversation and observation, the lineup for the Chinese men's team in the final was thus determined.

Next, the Chinese team played a men's team final with a score of 3-0. Before the match, many people were pessimistic about the Chinese men's table tennis team, and many foreign teams openly stated that they saw an opportunity. The Chinese men's table tennis team successfully defended their World Table Tennis Championships men's team title, achieving their 12th consecutive championship.

After the match, many friends sent Wang Hao screenshots of his emoji. It was a GIF of Wang Hao "pinching his philtrum" when Liang Jingkun was down 3-8 in the fifth game of the first match. Wang Hao laughed and said that he was genuinely nervous, but he didn't actually pinch his philtrum.

The night after the final, Wang Hao couldn't sleep again. Looking back, he realized he'd only had one good night's sleep in London—the night he arrived. The rest of the nights were spent in tension, excitement, and even euphoria. He recalled how, from the closed training camp to arriving in London, Wang Liqin, president of the Chinese Table Tennis Association, and head coach Qin Zhijian had always stood by the team, offering help whenever needed and providing unwavering support and trust. He heard the happy team celebrating Wang Chuqin's birthday, and he sent Wang Chuqin his own birthday wishes. Besides wishing him a happy birthday, Wang Hao had many things he wanted to say to Wang Chuqin, who had secured 10 wins in London. It was the unspoken understanding and secret between them, which he summarized in four words during our interview: "Those who understand, understand."

Back in Beijing, after drinking his own celebratory wine, Wang Hao went straight to bed and slept until 9 a.m. the next morning. Then, he joined us in reviewing the men's team's victory. A few days later, at the team's debriefing meeting, Wang Hao announced that Wang Chuqin, who had demonstrated the spirit and responsibility of the Chinese national table tennis team in preparation and competition at the London World Table Tennis Championships, would be the captain of the men's team, and Liang Jingkun would be the vice-captain. This decision was approved by all coaches and athletes. "We expect Wang Chuqin to inherit the responsibility and mission of captain and take the baton from Ma Long," said Wang Hao.

...
On April 8th, the Chinese Table Tennis Association announced the list of athletes participating in the London World Table Tennis Championships team event, with the men's team giving the last spot to Liang Jingkun. "This decision was made after careful consideration. We not only consulted the coaches and senior players, but also the participating athletes," said Wang Hao. "Ultimately, everyone cited Liang Jingkun's experience of reaching the semi-finals in singles at four World Championships and winning the fifth match at the Asian Championships, which gave us confidence that he could complete the task of this competition."

However, his achievements were not the only reason for Liang Jingkun's selection. His hard work and dedication during the closed training period were deeply etched in Wang Hao's mind. “During preparations, I reminded him that he was weighing nearly 90 kilograms and needed to lose some weight. So every day I saw Liang Jingkun doing his morning exercises, running on the treadmill early in the morning.” On those days, Wang Hao arrived at the gym 10 minutes earlier than Liang Jingkun to wait for him, “just to make him realize that we were all fighting together, and the head coach was also helping him.” Along with Coach Liu Zhiqiang, the three of them would exchange glances at each other by the treadmill every day, tacitly understanding and encouraging each other during extra training.

When the closed training ended, the men's team was ready to compete. Wang Liqin and Qin Zhijian encouraged this men's team, which wasn't favored by outsiders, telling them that they had the strongest support behind them—the entire Chinese table tennis team—and that they should always believe in the team. Therefore, even in this brand-new five-person team, only Wang Chuqin had experience in the knockout stage of the World Team Table Tennis Championships; the other four were like blank slates. But Wang Hao told his players: "It's a fact that none of the four have played in the knockout stage, but everyone must have the heart to defend their title. When I was interviewed, I said we were there to fight for victory, but facing you, I want to say: go defend your title!"

...

Before the match, Wang Hao kept nagging Liang Jingkun and Lin Shidong, repeatedly asking them who they felt had a psychological advantage against. “Actually, the athletes already have the answer in their hearts, but they also have self-doubt and wavering. We need to wait until they're sure before saying it out loud.” During this process, Lin Shidong worried that he would lose to Felix, and Wang Hao relieved his pressure by saying, “Placing you in the second singles is mainly to ensure you can beat Cotton in the fifth set. You've been playing against each other since the youth tournament, from childhood to now. Be prepared for this set.”

The third set of the entire match was the most intense. Liang Jingkun fell behind 0-2 at the start, a significant difference in score. He won 3 points in the first game and 1 point in the second. “Actually, if Liang Jingkun had played normally, he wouldn’t have had a problem against Alex, but he was too focused and a bit too nervous. Before the third game, I had him sit on the sidelines and rest for a while to calm down. I also told him, ‘Old Liang, this match is over for you. The next opportunity is yours. Cherish it and fight like a man,’” Wang Hao said. He added that if Liang Jingkun won the third game, he would have a chance. When the score was tied at 2-2, Alex couldn’t handle the pressure. “So before the deciding game, I told Liang Jingkun, this match isn’t up to him, it’s up to you.”

After the semifinals, the athletes went to the training hall to relax, returning to the hotel close to 11:30 PM. This led to the scene described at the beginning of the article.

...

In the first set of the men’s team final, which went to a deciding game, Liang Jingkun started from 3-8 down, winning eight consecutive points to secure a comeback victory. “Although Liang Jingkun was down 0-2 in the first set, he played well, although Zhang Ben performed better in the first two games. But against Liang Jingkun, playing well doesn't guarantee a win. When Zhang Ben has a plan, Liang Jingkun has his chance. Liang Jingkun is a tough opponent for anyone; he plays psychologically. If your opponent has even the slightest idea, then sorry, it's Liang Jingkun's turn.” As Wang Hao said, Liang Jingkun rallied.

“I was indeed quite nervous when he was catching up, but not like in the videos my friends sent me later, where he was pinching his philtrum. It wasn't that serious, because I knew Liang Jingkun had a strong belief in him. I thought about the look in our eyes every morning during closed training by the treadmill; I believed that belief would support him to win the match.”

In the second set of the final, Wang Chuqin defeated Matsushima Teru 3-1. After winning, he pointed to his chest with his index finger, then pointed to Wang Hao. After each victory in London, Wang Chuqin would interact with his coaches and teammates off the court, sometimes by exchanging fist bumps, sometimes by pointing in unison. "Through these interactions, Wang Chuqin expresses his feelings for his country and his team. Every time we point at each other, I feel a mutual trust, which is crucial in team competitions," said Wang Hao. "Wang Chuqin's perfect record of 10 wins and 10 losses at the London World Table Tennis Championships demonstrates his responsibility when the team faces difficulties, his competitive ability, and his core role in the team. Through this experience in the team competition, I am even more certain that he is fully capable of fulfilling the role of captain of the men's team in my mind."

In the third match, Lin Shidong defeated Togami Hayabusa 3-1. He put down his racket and rushed to the coaching bench to hug Wang Hao. "I was incredibly excited when Lin Shidong rushed towards me. Later, I saw him talk about how I spent every day watching videos with them during preparation, and I was deeply moved. I know many people think I spoke harshly to Lin Shidong, but that was just to put appropriate pressure on him during daily training and matches. During the World Table Tennis Championships, we always communicated and prepared from the athletes' perspective, prioritizing their needs. I hope everyone can understand. When I hugged Lin Shidong, I could feel the trust between us."

This five-member Chinese men's table tennis team, initially underestimated, fought their way through to defend their men's team title. Wang Hao said that the team became more united after the London World Table Tennis Championships. After the match, he went to Zhou Qihao, affirming his perseverance, and patted Xiang Peng on the shoulder, telling him, "This experience will be a valuable asset for your future career and life.")

What did WRB, HYZ and KM, CY do to be in the team?
One can look at a YTD performance by player and see that those 4 are doing better than the alternatives. And there might also be a growth factor involved as well. Transparency would be nice though.

That's the abridged translation for WH's review of WTTC 2026 in the previous post. Had to separate the posts due to the 15,000-character limit that has been put in place since the forum upgrade a few years back.

Having read articles by both for years, the French media frankly puts the Japanese media to shame when it comes to "giving it to me straight", especially the fear of losing AND winning.

(Team World Championships: China has won its bet again, and now what?)
https://pingpang.paris/en/blogs/cir...a-chine-a-encore-gagne-son-pari-et-maintenant

Continuing from previous post...

(After an unprecedented battle against the rest of the world, the Chinese women's and men's national teams respectively won their 7th and 12th consecutive world titles in London, reaffirming their undisputed dominance of the table tennis world despite facing unprecedented adversity. In the men's competition, the outcome was decided by a few points, but those points speak volumes.

Table tennis is a sport played in best-of-three or best-of-four sets to 11 points, and in the end, China emerged victorious. We leave these twelve days of the World Team Championships somewhat dazed, stunned, with the feeling of having run into a concrete wall while trying to dodge a post. Everything was in place for them to succeed this time, but reality brutally reminded us of its true nature; it was too good to be true, too false. It's almost embarrassing to admit, but this one stings a little, because the stalemate at the end of these World Team Championships is commensurate with the hopes harbored by certain nations – France and Japan chief among them – of bringing down this empire that, for once, seemed weakened. And yet, not only did neither team manage to push China to the decisive match, but above all, they were both stifled, thwarted by its weakest element on paper, the very element through which the victory was initially supposed to hinge.

High March, Head Held High

It's an undeniable fact: the most beatable Chinese team since the beginning of the century has defeated the strongest French and Japanese teams of the same period. Its group stage defeats against South Korea and Sweden seem as distant as they are petty, like a decoy designed to maintain hope only to subdue it at the decisive moment, and to remind the world that the most contested reigns are often the most cunning. You can't topple a monarch who's more vigilant than ever about his blind spots. "So close, yet so far," Nathanaël Molin said with remarkable clarity in the mixed zone, proud of his players, head held high after a nail-biting semi-final he had fought with fierce determination; because a duel between two teams is also a duel between two coaches. The trap he set for Wang Hao by betting on Flavien Coton to grab Wang Chuqin by the collar at the start of the match almost worked. The coach from northern France led two sets to one, then 4-2 in the deciding set, pushing the world number one to his limits to snatch the first point (11-8), all too aware that Félix Lebrun had a very good chance of beating Lin Shidong once again.

It came down to a few points, certainly, but not only that. China's deserved victory also rested on an error in judgment. In both the semi-final and the final, the turning point came from the same man: Liang Jingkun. He was meant to be the crack in the wall to exploit, but instead he became the bane of French and Japanese hopes, at radically different times, it should be noted. Against France, it was to break a momentum and regain the advantage. Having scored only four points in two sets (11-3, 11-1), he liberated an entire nation by defeating Alexis Lebrun in a match of exceptional ferocity (15-13, 12-10, 11-2). Félix was backed into a corner, Wang Chuqin was on a roll, and all that remained was to seize the opportunity. Positioned as the opening player in the final to prevent Lin Shidong from facing Harimoto, and virtually guaranteeing China a third point against Togami, Liang Jingkun ended the final before it even began, staging another comeback against Wonder Kid (8-11, 4-11, 11-9, 13-11, 11-8). This was a crushing blow to Seiya Kishikawa, who was unable to find the words to rally his players. At the start of the tournament, Liang Jingkun was ranked 21st in the world, behind An Jaehyun, Alexis Lebrun, Tomokazu Harimoto, Togami, Xiang Peng, Simon Gauzy, and others. He reminded everyone that in crucial moments, the Chinese don't rely on world rankings; their mental strength and skill are governed by different rules. So yes, if this, if that, if such a rally, if such a scratch… With "ifs," we could prevent China from being world champion. The fact is, they are, and there is no one to blame but their excellence.

“Jiayou”

The debates surrounding the men's draw nearly resulted in the upset of the decade. As commentators on the world circuit, we would have looked foolish if the men had won but the women had lost. Also facing the Japanese team, which that day was far more impressive than their male compatriots, Wang Manyu, Sun Yingsha, and Kuai Man were pushed to a deciding match. Miwa Harimoto perfectly timed her victory to secure her first career win against the world number two (3-2), and Honoka Hashimoto was imperious in the third match against Kuai Man (3-1). But Ma Lin's block held firm thanks to an unstoppable Sun Yingsha and a vengeful Wang Manyu. London buzzed with excitement during the final two days of the tournament, so much so that, while it remained sadly empty until the semi-finals, Wembley's OVO Arena ultimately seemed too small for such moments. The Chinese crowd, which turned out in droves on Saturday, was like a second coach, a sixth player, a match already won for their heroes. The power and coordination of their cheers – the famous "Jiayou!", the equivalent of "Go!", shouted in unison by thousands – drowned out any foreign attempt to make themselves heard. That's the nature of sport, especially when that sport is a national treasure for the world's second most populous country. Wherever they play, except perhaps at the Champions Cup in Montpellier, the Chinese team is playing at home.

Exit Point

So now, what to say? What to do? Is this hurdle definitively insurmountable? Is the silver medal a substitute gold medal, given that China is alone in its category, alone on its planet? Not a very sporting spirit. And yet, there's definitely something to reconsider. Perhaps the problem lies elsewhere than in the 2-0 deficit and 8-3 deficit in the third period that turned the tide, elsewhere than in Wang Hao's coaching, Xiao Zhan's ball-handling, Wang Liqin's direction, or Qin Zhijian's mental preparation. Elsewhere than in the world's most prestigious training centers. Perhaps the problem lies in the way they approach a match against this team, which is seen as the ultimate challenge. Their victories bolster their record, which in turn enhances their aura, which subjects their opponents to a predetermined outcome, which forces them to confront their fear of winning, which inevitably leads to another Chinese victory, and the cycle begins again.

Everyone knows that even at the lowest level, victory begins with treating the theoretically stronger opponent as just another opponent. But once you've said that, you haven't said much. Ask Félix Lebrun if he sees Wang Chuqin as an opponent he can beat, and he'll tell you yes. Of course. Otherwise, why even bother sitting down at the table? The real challenge is maintaining that mindset even when you're winning, and even more so when you're winning easily, when that nagging doubt creeps in, that feeling that tells you you shouldn't win, that this isn't the logical outcome of the match. Yes, it is the logical outcome. Sometimes, the easier it seems, the more subtly difficult it becomes. And the harder it seems, the easier it can actually become. This sport is too often irrational to allow it the luxury of logic. China isn't invincible; it's simply reassuring to convince yourself that it is.)
